an exciting internship in Oxfam International's New York advocacy office
for someone with a passion for protecting the rights of people in
conflict. You must have some background in humanitarian action, policy
and research. A familiarity with the United Nations, particularly the
Security Council, and experience in a humanitarian context are

The
purpose of this post is to provide the intern with an opportunity to
strengthen her/his advocacy skills at the NY level, knowledge of UN
institutions, and skills working with an international NGO. The intern
will support Oxfam International’s advocacy work to influence the UN on
its policy on protracted conflicts and humanitarian assistance. This
internship will be part of the OI Secretariat Advocacy and Campaigns
team.
The successful applicant will have:
- Proof of
graduation from (or current enrolment in) a graduate program in a
relevant field such as international relations, conflict resolution,
humanitarian affairs, or international development.
- Knowledge of
international humanitarian/conflict issues and/or of UN institutions,
policies and decision-making processes a plus.
- Strong analytical and writing skills.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work within a team and with a larger network and allies.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time effectively.
- Affinity with the aims and objectives of Oxfam.
Internship purpose
The
purpose of this internship is to provide the intern with an opportunity
to strengthen her/his advocacy skills at the NY level, knowledge of UN
institutions, and skills working with an international NGO. The intern
will support Oxfam International’s advocacy work in implementing
strategies to influence the UN on its policy on protracted conflicts and
humanitarian assistance and by providing general administrative
support. She/He will focus on specific projects where her/his knowledge
and skills will be put into practice.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- Conduct
desk research on the humanitarian crises in situations which may
include Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Western Sahara
and the Democratic Republic of Congo and monitor daily developments;
- Track and analyse developments in the UN Security Council related to these crises;
- Support thematic research on protection of civilians, resilience, and other humanitarian issues;
- Develop
advocacy skills by attending meetings with UN Security Council experts
and UN agencies, together with Oxfam policy advisors;
- Monitor new research publications related to conflict and humanitarian assistance;
- Work collaboratively with other organisations and within networks by representing Oxfam at meetings of NGO coalitions;
- Attend public meetings at the UN Secretariat, UN agencies, and UN-related events in New York and draft notes;
- Draft letters, notes and briefings for Oxfam with the support of the NY-based policy advisors.
- Support and prepare presentation materials for public events;
- Assist with maintaining the OI NY external Advocacy Contacts’ database and in setting up meetings for visitors coming to NY; and
- Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Key competencies
