Internship: International Labour Organization is offering internship positions

If you are thinking of entering the world of the UN within a specialized agency, the International Labour Organization (ILO) will offer you its unique tripartite structure and projects around the decent work agenda, where working with governments, employers and workers is the exciting challenge of every days work.

The ILO is devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues. If you are interested in joining the ILO as an intern you will help to make its vision of universal human conditions of labour a reality.

At the ILO you will face dynamic, results-based practices. Our culture promotes high-performance and encourages knowledge-sharing and enhanced talent management. As the acknowledged leader in labour issues, ILO is committed to building future leaders in the world of work. ILO's Internship Programme provides a wide range of opportunities for young high calibre graduate and postgraduate students or recently graduated candidates who now look for a first working experience in fields related to the ILO's mandate and activities.

What will I learn and take away from this experience?

The aim of our internship programme is to give you exposure to the daily work of the ILO. You will be given the opportunity to support and learn from our people and be part of a team. You will be accompanying outstanding and inspiring career professionals and senior management within the Organization. Moreover, you will be exposed to high-profile conferences, participate in meetings, and contribute to analytical work as well as support to work on our fundamental principles, exciting programmes and groundbreaking strategies. Initially you will take on the amount of responsibility you can shoulder; the potential for growth, however, is yours to develop.

As an intern at the ILO, you are seen as a valuable source of young talent that can contribute through the most recent academic thinking and research experience to our daily work and challenges.

Can I apply for an internship?

Every year a limited number of places for internships are available. To check if you are eligible to join the programme, you should ask yourself the following questions:

• What particularly interests you about the ILO?

• Are you currently enrolled in the last year of a graduate degree (Master or equivalent) or in a higher degree programme relevant to the ILO's work or have you completed such a programme in the year preceding the application?

• Do you have a working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO's official languages (English, French or Spanish)?

Furthermore, you should be able and interested to adapt to an international, multicultural, multilingual environment and have excellent communication skills. As an intern you need to be able to work fairly independently as well as part of a team and be initiative and flexible. Any past work experience and knowledge of IT-related work would be an advantage. Please also note, that close relatives of a serving ILO official are not eligible. The same applies to candidates who have already been working at the ILO or who have already participated in the Internship programme earlier.

How long is the Internship?

The length of an internship is usually between three up to a maximum of six months. Internships start on the 1st or 15th of each month (or the day after if it happens to be a non-working day)

Is the internship paid?

Where an intern is not supported by an institution (university, government or other institution), a stipend to cover basic subsistence costs will be paid by the ILO.

What do previous interns say about the Programme?

Working at the ILO has given me a glimpse into the work of a specialized UN agency whose work is well regarded world-over. Working in a multi-ethnic environment and in an organization that respects and appreciates its employees has left an indelible appreciation in my mind for the ILO.

Shagun Kare (Employment Sector – ED/ EMP )

The aim of the organization is in line with my interests and my beliefs and I like how the organization is based on three constituents. What I found of particular interest in my programme was the clear connection and collaboration between headquarters and the field. I have learned how an organization, consisting of many constituents, can work towards decent work in different kinds of projects and programmes. What I also appreciated was the dedicated staff members and their interesting profiles and I will also remember all the interns from all over the world that I got to know in the office.

Karin Rehnberg, (International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour IPEC)

One of the special things that I have come across during the course of my internship here at the ILO has been the diversity, openness, and professionalism that is demonstrated by the ILO staff around the house. I appreciate working with a supervisor who has a diverse background and is highly attentive to the work we are doing together as a team. This spirit of teamwork and professionalism, which I believe applies to the rest of the house as well, is a great source of encouragement for me in doing my work, and is likely to stick with me to guide my future professional career.

Abdul Saboor Atrafi (Sector)

The attentiveness of ILO staff to ensure the well being of interns, combined with the ILO Intern Network's active role in organizing enrichment activities, facilitates a refreshing array of professional and extracurricular growth opportunities for those interested in learning first-hand about the work of the ILO!

Brian Clayton, Co-President of the ILO Intern Board (Microinsurance Innovation Facility - Social Finance Programme - SFP )

I am a student from France in my last year of my Master's program in HR Global Management. I am currently in the ILO for my requisite internship before graduating. ILO is turning out to be the best organization for me because I am learning so much from everyone here. This intercultural, international environment is really rewarding and this makes the internship experience really special. I have only been here for a few days and will stay for 6 months. I am really excited for this opportunity. I really want to do my best because this is the first time I am seeing how HR, trade union, social security, decent work and other fields go from theory to reality. At the ILO, you have the chance to see how labour standards are applied in each country. The ILO strategic objectives seek to create a more ethical and fair world for the future. Being here allows you to become more responsible and aware of what is happening in the world in such issues as child labour.Come and join us to be part of this movement for better global working conditions for everyone!

Marion-Cecile Adolphe (Human Resources Department- HRD)

Keep in mind...

The cost of travel, insurance and accommodation, as well as living expenses, are the responsibility of you as an intern or your sponsoring institution: You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements and for obtaining the necessary passport and visa or other documents for entering Switzerland or any other duty station. You are also responsible for arranging your own accommodation as well as for procuring and maintaining your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents while you are pursuing your internship at the ILO.

How do I apply?

You are advised to consult the ILO's website to familiarize yourself with the work of the various sectors and departments and identify the areas that interest you most.

You can submit your application together with a covering letter to our roster (
https://erecruit.ilo.org/public/). Profiles for internship positions are posted on a regular basis

Your application through the roster increases the visibility of your profile by the different departments.

Please note that only two applications per recruitment advertisement period are accepted.

When would I get an answer? :

If a department opens an internship position, it will consult the roster. In case your profile matches, you will be contacted directly by the department. Please note that due to the large number of applicants, departments are not necessarily in a position to reply to each request and only short-listed applicants will be contacted for telephone interview.

Application call: M100 Youth Media Workshop 2012

“After the Web 2.0 Revolutions: New Media as an Instrument for Change and Democracy?”
19 to 24 August, Potsdam/Germany
In 2011, regime change was for the first time initiated by social networks. Beginning in Tunisia, bloggers and activists called for demonstrations against their authoritarian ruling regime on Facebook and Twitter etc. Then in 2010/2011, thousands and thousands of people in several countries in North Africa and the Middle East took to the streets and – as in Tunisia und Egypt – brought about the overthrow of their rulers. In other Arab countries too, such as Libya, Syria and Bahrain, they have played and are playing a major role in rebellion and political change. All over the world young people are becoming politically active on the Internet and in social networks, twittering, posting and blogging opinions, reports and news out into the world, directly and without delay.
The Arab Spring has changed our view of social and new media. The possibility of using the Internet to change society has led to more emphasis being placed on the political component and the term “Facebook Revolution” was quickly coined. Although revolutions and political change are still brought about by people, the Web 2.0 technical revolution and the so-called “cross-media” interaction of new and conventional media like print and television that it allows for has played a crucial role and will probably remain vitally important. In retrospect, the Web 2.0 revolution may go down in history as just as important as the invention of the printing press or of audiovisual mass media and its digitalisation.
This year for the first time we plan a workshop with young journalists from Europe and from countries in transformation in the Arab world. Its goal is to provide aspiring young journalists from Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Algeria etc. with an opportunity to engage in an intensive exchange of views and ideas and build networks in dialogue with young journalists from Western and Eastern Europe. Renowned media figures will lead the workshop. New ideas will be developed and open debates initiated.
The following are just some of the questions the workshop will focus on:
  • What does the Web 2.0 revolution mean for politics, the media and society? What can we learn from it?
  • Can the experiences of the Arab Spring be transferred to other situations?
  • Do the ‘network revolutionaries’ still have an influence on society and politics, even after the overthrow of regimes?
  • How do social networks influence developments in politics, culture and society; what can new media achieve as political infrastructure?
  • Could new media help stabilise political transformation processes and promote democratic structures and more participation?
  • What role can both the conventional and new media and their cross-media interaction play in these transformation processes?
  • What similarities and differences are there in the various countries?
  • How can sustainable use be made of social networks?
  • How does the local media, which is so crucial in democratisation processes, function in the various countries; does it even exist?
  • How great is the risk that new media could lead not to more freedom but to more control and censorship?
The participants will publish the results of the workshop creatively and linked with the various new media channels (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube).

Conditions of participation:

Young journalists between 18 and 26 years old from all over Europe and countries of transformation in the Arab region can apply by submitting a short text in English (three pages max.) on the topic, “The Web Revolution – what influence do Facebook, Twitter etc. have on society, politics and journalism in my country?”
Please include a brief CV and motivational statement in your application, stating your reasons for applying for this particular workshop (both in English). 20 to 25 participants will be selected from among the applicants and invited to Potsdam from 19 (arrival) to 24 August 2012 (departure). The organisers of the M100 Youth Media Workshop will cover accommodation and board during the workshop. A travel allowance is provided for. The workshop will be held in English.
Please send your application in by 28 June 2012 to s.sasse@m100potsdam.org
The workshop is an initiative of the City of Potsdam and Media International e.V., and supported by the Federal Foreign Office, and the ZEIT Foundation; co-operation partners include the Medienkompetenz- und Innovationszentrum Babelsberg (MIZ), DW-TV, and the European Youth Press.

Exams are Hard in Any Country: Effective Study Tips

College is a fun and exciting time. Your life is opened up to so many new experiences and new opportunities that the possibilities seem (and really are) endless. Students can learn about topics they never imagined studying, forge relationships with people they would have never encountered in any other environment, and even take their academic pursuit abroad for a period of time. These educational and personal pursuits are worthwhile in so many different ways for a young and passionate individual. While college is a time full of opportunity and growth, it is also a time of seemingly endless stress and exhaustion. With late night study sessions, intensely hard classes, and ever impending deadlines, when you're in the thick of it nothing seems more difficult than college. We can all admit, there are few things more daunting to a college student than final exams (besides maybe an 8 am class). In many ways, it seems that we as college students put the weight of an entire semester into one hour long exam. This is bound to be overwhelmingly stressful. While college exams are always going to be a drag, there are several strategies you can use in the dorms, at home, or abroad to study more effectively.

Think about Surroundings
Your physical environment is one of the most important factors in staying focused and engaged. I would argue that your surroundings are the single most important aspect of studying in college. All too often, college student place themselves in the most distracting and disruptive environment and try to cram for their "life-ending" exam. Your optimal study environment is very much a product of personal preference. Some people work better with some sound in the background, while others need complete silence in order to be fully focused. Consider what surroundings encourage you to work best. No matter what, you're going to want to find a space that is distraction less and comfortable. Working in your dorm room (if you live in the dorms) or in your room abroad can be a very bad choice. Because these are the spaces that we sleep and relax in, they may not encourage a studious state of mind. In order to really use your time effective and efficiently find a space that you know will work for you.

Be Motivated
Alright, so you're probably never going to really really want to study for that upcoming exam. Studying is typically a drag. Particularly when you are studying abroad, there are just so many other things you'd rather be doing. But, of course, there comes a time that studying is a must. However, you shouldn't try to force yourself to study for a test when you know you are too tired or too distracted to focus. You want to be motivated to get your studying done. If you are particularly sleepy, all the information you are studying will likely go in one ear and out the other. Studying relies heavily on your state of mind. Try resting for an hour or two before you try to study for a long period of time. This will help you get the most out of your study session and help you waste less time during the study process.

Plan Things Out
One of the most difficult aspects of final exam time is that you are taking a test in every class you have. Sure, one exam is tough, but having five all in the same week can be excruciating. It's in situations like this that planning out your studying is a good idea. Students should try to create an agenda for their studying so that they can find a way to fit everything they need to in to the time given. Plan out what days and times you are going to dedicate to specific subjects. Within those time slots take a look at the actual material you are hoping to cover. Make sure that you are planning out something that is reasonable and achievable. By planning out your time and setting up a study agenda, you give yourself an idea of progress and accomplishment. This can help busy students feel less overwhelmed by the daunting task. You will know that if you stick with your plan, you will cover everything that you need to cover.
