2014 PhD Studentship on Quantum Enhanced Metrology at University of Sussex in UK

University of Sussex is inviting application for a PhD studentship on Quantum enhanced metrology. Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in a relevant subject with first class Honours, (or a non-UK equivalent degree). Alternatively, a second-class Bachelor degree plus a Masters degree with Merit classification (or non-UK equivalent). Studentship includes £13726 per annum tax-free bursary and waiver of UK/EU fees each year for 3.5 years. The intended start date is 18th September 2014. The application deadline is 31th August 2014.
About Scholarship: The ability to detect and measure physical phenomena with ever-greater sensitivity is an important technological challenge. Not only does it allow us to subject scientific theories to higher levels of scrutiny, but it could also lead to new commercial applications. Current sensors rely on conventional (classical) physics. However, by using a fully quantum approach it is possible to achieve much greater sensitivities to phenomena such as magnetic, electric or gravitational fields or rotations. While the feasibility of these ideas has been demonstrated in principle, the key problem is making them practical. The project will be supervised by Dr. Jacob Dunningham. This is a full time studentship and the successful candidate will be able to devote their whole time to research. There may be opportunities to engage in teaching physics at Sussex. This is not guaranteed, but if agreed, additional payment will be made.
