What placements are being offered?
The House of Commons Service is offering 9 placements in the academic year 2013/14 for Sandwich course students. These are within:
The Department of HR and Change x 1 placement. This is a Human Resource focused placement. The successful student will work with both central and departmental HR sections.
The Department of Chamber and Committee Services x 1 placement. This is a research based placement supporting one or two Select Committees within the Committee Support Service in the Department of Chamber & Committee Services.
The Department of Information Services x 2 placements.
Parliamentary Outreach - The purpose of this placement is to support the Project Manager with the running of the new ‘Universities Workstream’ and usual departmental business.
Social and General Statistics - This is a statistics based placement supporting the Social and General Statistics arm of Information Services. The successful student will assist the section’s statisticians in their work and conduct research for topics depending on events and interests in Parliament.
The Department of Facilities x 5 placements. The Department of Facilities will be offering five placements. The positions will be within the building Maintenance Team and the Projects Delivery Team.
What do we offer?
The placements at the House of Commons are designed for students on sandwich courses and are open to all individuals who meet the criteria set out in our Sandwich Student Information Booklet and job descriptions.
The placements in the Department of HR & Change, Department of Information Services (Outreach), and Department of Facilities offer placements that last for 48 weeks. The placements in the Department of Chamber & Committee Services and the Department of Information Services (Statistics) last for 40 weeks. All placements will commence in September/October 2013.
Placements
Each placement offers a unique insight into its area of specialism, as well as the workings of the House of Commons and Parliament in general. Not only will each student get involved in the day-to-day work required of the sections they work in, they will also be engaged in a number of additional and educational projects.
The House offers a wide variety of learning opportunities, job-specific, developmental, formal and informal. These include formal in-house training, on-the-job training, and opportunities for coaching and mentoring.
Benefits
The benefits of a placement with the House of Commons are outlined below:
• 18 days paid leave
• 8 Bank Holidays
• Up to 12 days paid study leave*
• A salary of £16,524 per annum
• Access to learning and development opportunities
• An open and supportive environment
* Pro rata dependent on the number of weeks worked in each department.
The placement scheme is analogous to that in the Civil Service and the remuneration paid to sandwich course students whilst serving at the House of Commons will be similar to that paid to students undertaking placements in the Civil Service. The conditions of service of staff of the House are kept broadly in line with those of the Home Civil Service and many of these will also apply to the Sandwich placements.
