2014-2015 PhD Scholarships for MIT Portugal Program

Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are offering PhD scholarships for MIT Portugal Program PhD, MSc and Advanced Courses. For students with an international outlook seeking to develop a systems approach to their research and career development, these programs offer a special opportunity to engage with the best that MIT and Portugal have to offer. Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency.
About Scholarship: The MIT Portugal Program is an international partnership involving MIT and Portuguese Universities and Industry. The goal of the initiative is to strengthen the country’s knowledge base and international competitiveness through a strategic investment in people, knowledge and ideas in innovative technology sectors. MIT Portugal Program provides world-class training – including real-world preparation for future employment – in leading-edge areas of engineering, management and policy to top students who seek to become leaders in technological innovation.
Study: Scholarships are awarded for the following PhD Programs: Bioengineering Systems, Leaders for Technical Industries, Sustainable Energy Systems and Transportation Systems and for the following advanced courses: Bio Engineering Systems (Advanced Studies), Sustainable Energy Systems (Executive Masters), Technology Management Enterprise (Executive Masters) and Transportation Systems (MSc). Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD, MSc program and Advanced courses. Scholarship Provider: Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), IP

Accreditation: 
Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an accredited university. Massachusetts Institute of Technology is accredited by the Association of NEASC, AAU, COFHE, APLU.

Eligibility: The following citizens are eligible to apply to this call: Portuguese or citizens from the State members of the European Union; citizens from other countries provided the application is supported by the Portuguese hosting institutions adherent to the Agreement for the International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Higher Education), celebrated with Foundation for Science and Technology; citizens from other countries with a valid resident permit or long-term residents; other citizens selected by interview.
-PhD Programs: candidates must hold a Bologna 2nd cycle degree, a Master’s degree, or a 4 or 5-year degree (e.g. Licenciatura). Candidates in the final year of these degrees are welcome to apply.
-Master’s Program (MSc): candidates must hold a Bologna 1st cycle degree or a 4 or 5-year degree. Candidates in the final year of these degrees are welcome to apply.
-Executive Master’s Programs (DEA/DFA): candidates must hold a Bologna 2nd cycle degree, a Master’s degree, or a 4 or 5-year degree (e.g. Licenciatura). Candidates in the final year of these degrees are welcome to apply.
-Language skills: Candidates must be fluent in English. All courses are conducted in English.

Scholarship Open for: Portuguese, Citizens from the State members of the European Union and other countries can apply for these PhD scholarships.
Number of awards: 10 PhD scholarships per year are offered.
Selection Criteria: Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. The evaluation procedure may require an interview in English either in person or by video conference. Preference will be given to candidates who present good results in the “GRE General Test” (general exam of the Graduate Record Examination). The evaluation panel will review the submitted applications, weighting the review elements and producing a sorted list of candidates.
Online Application: The mode of applying is online. The application form prompts you to attach the following (your application will not be considered without them):
-Your CV (in English);
-Your motivation letter (in English);
-A digital copy of all your academic certificates (stating the final classification you obtained), and the respective official transcripts (listing the grade/classification of each discipline/subjects you attended during each degree). If you are on the final year of your degree, you can present the certificates and official transcripts in September 2014.

Deadline: Deadlines for submitting your applications:
-Doctoral Programs: January 26th – April 15th  2014,  5pm GMT;
-Advance Course in Bioengineering; Executive Master in Technology Management Enterprise; MSc in Complex Transport Infrastructure Systems (CTIS) - January 26th – May 15th  2014,  5pm GMT;
-Executive Master in Sustainable Energy Systems: February 11th – June 15th 2014,  5pm GMT.
