Traineeship on migration PAID ICRC

Geneva - Paid Traineeship - Full time

Purpose of the position

The Trainee is an active member of the “Civilian Protection” Unit. The Unit acts as a pool of specialists within the Central Tracing Agency and Protection Division. The Trainee assists the Advisor on Migration Issues providing advice and guidance to ICRC's protection operations in the field.

Specific responsibilities of the Trainee include

  • Assisting the Advisor on Migration Issues in planning, organizing and following-up on ICRC internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences and field missions in relation to migration, and participating in those events as required
  • Undertaking background research into policy and practice of the ICRC and other relevant organizations developing activities in favor of migrants. These background researches are to be used in preparing collection of best practices, guidance documents and working tools, articles and other publications
  • Drafting and/or editing documents such as advisory notes, minutes of meeting, reference document and tools as mentioned above for the Unit and/or for the Protection Division
  • Revising and updating the existing "Migration Forum" data base used by delegates in the field
  • Assisting the members of the Unit to organize the management of information
  • As an active member of the Unit taking part in its efforts to disseminate the Professional Standards for protection work with other humanitarian actors and UN agencies
  • Undertaking any other tasks as required by the Protection Division

Reports to :Advisor on Migration Issues


Qualifications and Experience

  • Master degree in international relations, international law, political or social science or equivalent, preferably with a specialisation in migration or Human Rights
  • Previous experience with an NGO or an International Organization highly desirable
  • Fluent in French and English, working proficiency of Spanish a plus
  • Good knowledge of MS Office tools and databases
  • Good capacities to search for data in the Internet, documentation centers and other relevant sources of public information

Profile

  • Excellent analytical skills and capacity to draft concise documents
  • Ability to work on short delays
  • Team spirit
  • Ideally between 25 and 30 years old

Duration: 1 year, full time
Starting date: 1 February 2015 (please specify availability in the cover letter)

Competencies that the Trainee is expected to acquire / reinforce during the year
  • Excellent understanding of ICRC's principles, methodology and guidelines in protection work
  • Good knowledge of present debates and publications related to migration and protection work among UN agencies, NGO's and academia
