Earth Journalism Network Intern

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is seeking a full-time or part-time intern for the spring semester to support project development, communications, and administrative activities. This is a position that can be based in the Washington, D.C. office or remotely, and will provide the interns with an opportunity to obtain first-hand knowledge and experience with overseas development projects, media development and data analysis.
EJN establishes networks of environmental journalists in countries where they don’t exist, and builds their capacity where they do, through training workshops and the development of training materials, support for production and distribution, and the provision of small grants. Recently, EJN has launched a number of environmental data mapping platforms, with additional projects in development.  EJN’s spring intern will provide key assistance to staff managing these various projects.
Responsibilities will include:
  • Help maintain and update the Earth Journalism Network website, assist with implementation of new web features as needed
  • Contribute to the oversight and expansion of EJN’s active data mapping platforms
  • Review new training materials, contribute to small grants administration, and help plan upcoming events (notably, EJN’s weeklong April conference)
  • Conduct desk research on new opportunities for public and private funding, and identify subject matter experts and academics relevant to current EJN initiatives
  • Assist with the writing, design, and preparation of communication materials and concept notes
  • Conduct outreach for EJN through listserv, Facebook, and Twitter accounts
  • Administrative duties as necessary
Qualifications
  • A demonstrated interest in global environmental issues and media development
  • Previous non-profit or media experience desired, but not required
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong Microsoft office skills and previous experience with social media and blogging platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress)
  • The ability to multi-task and work on projects independently
  • Previous experience with mapping technology, graphic design, website design, infographics, and/or videography a significant asset
