2014 Young Scientists Summer Program for International Applicants in Austria

IIASA offers young scientists summer program to talented young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA’s ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change. Each year the YSSP Committee selects about 50-55 students. Applicants from all countries are welcome. Although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of countries in which IIASA has a National Member Organization (NMO) a limited number of applicants from non-NMO countries are accepted each year and in very exceptional cases funding is provided. Application deadline is January 13, 2014. 
About Scholarship: IIASA’s annual 3-month Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers research opportunities to talented young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA’s ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change. From June through August accepted participants work within the Institute’s research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. Funding is provided through IIASA’s National Member Organizations.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Program applicants should meet the following criteria:
-interested candidates should have research experience corresponding to a level typical of a researcher about 2 years prior to receiving a PhD or equivalent degree. Candidates already holding a PhD degree (by January 13, 2014) are asked to consider applying to IIASA’spostdoc program;
-a summer research proposal that clearly fits the research agenda of a selected IIASA
-ability to work independently as well as to interact with other scientists;
-fluency in English and the ability to communicate in a scientific environment; and
-willingness to actively participate in a broad range of interdisciplinary scientific activities at IIASA. 
Scholarship Open for: Applicants from all countries are welcome.

Duration: Scholarships are offered for 3-month. 
Value: Most of IIASA’s National Member Organizations (NMO) provide special grants to enable young scientists (either their own nationals or foreign students studying in their country) to participate in the YSSP.
IIASA does not charge a tuition fee.
-Travel expenses from and to the home institution are usually covered by the NMOs in addition to the local costs covered by the grant. Based on our experience students usually require a total sum of around €5,000 – €5,500 on average to cover all the living and travel expenses related to their YSSP participation.
-YSSP participants must have valid medical insurance for their stay in Austria and should bring their insurance cards or certificates with them. 
Selection Criteria: Each year the YSSP Committee selects about 50-55 students. The following criteria are taken into consideration during the review and selection process:
-the quality of the proposed research plan, including its relevance to (i) the research agenda of the program selected by the applicant,
-the research objectives of the candidate and
-the corresponding background and skills of the applicant;
-IIASA’s capacity to host the proposed research;
-letters of recommendation. 
Notification: Candidates will be informed about acceptance of their applications by March 10, 2014.
