Internship in the Africa Department Transparency International

The Transparency International Secretariat (TI-S) is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active intern to support its work in the Africa Department.
Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 100 chapters worldwide and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.
Main function: Assisting the Africa team in their work
Starting date: 1 February 2014
Duration: 6 months, full time
Department: Sub-Saharan Africa
Remuneration: EUR 450 (according to the German labour and social security law)
Location: Berlin, Germany

Key tasks:
• Assisting with the implementation of a number of projects in the department, including the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres, the Africa Regional Programme etc.
• Assisting with the budget monitoring and financial reporting for on-going projects;
• Assisting with preparations for the participation of delegates from National Chapters to attend a series of programme-related workshops in Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. flight and hotel bookings, visa support );
• Liaising with contact groups and National Chapters;
• Assisting with the production of TI publications, by providing translation and/or proof reading of documents;
• Monitoring international media for corruption related developments of interest to TI;
• Assisting with small research tasks
• Other various administrative tasks and support to the Africa department.

Knowledge, experience, interests and skills:
• Academic background in political science / international relations / international development (other relevant fields will be considered);
• Very good financial skills and financial reporting experience (required);
• Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications including proven experience of working with Excel at an advanced level (required);
• Excellent knowledge of English and French (written and spoken) (required);
• Some knowledge of, and considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption;
• Knowledge of, or proven interest in, the Sub-Saharan Africa region;
• Adaptable and flexible personality, good time management skills, able to handle multiple tasks and workloads, ability to prioritise own work;
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities, good team player;
• Some prior office experience very desirable.

The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme opens for applications for the 2014 International (Law Fellowship Programme). The deadline for applications has been extended until 1 December 2013.

OBJECTIVES 

The Fellowship Programme provides high-quality training by leading scholars and practitioners on a broad range of core subjects of international law. In addition, the interactive nature of the training allows the participants to share experiences and exchange ideas, which promotes greater understanding and cooperation on contemporary issues of international law.
The Fellowship Programme is intended to enable qualified professionals, in particular government officials and teachers of international law from developing countries and countries with emerging economies, to deepen their knowledge of international law and of the legal work of the United Nations and its associated bodies.
The Fellowship Programme accommodates up to 30 participants.

THE PROGRAMME 

The Fellowship Programme consists of an annual six-week summer course at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands. The participants attend lectures and seminars in international law organized by the Codification Division as well as the public international law session at The Hague Academy of International Law.
The lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division are given by eminent scholars and practitioners in international law from different regions and legal systems. The lectures and seminars are given in either English or French.The 2014 Programme will be conducted in French.

2014 FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME 

The 2014 Fellowship Programme will be held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 30 June to 8 August 2014. It will be conducted in French. The topics that will be covered in the seminars and lectures organized by the Codification Division may include:

  • The Scholarship is intended to support full-time study, based at the University of Glasgow campuses, notwithstanding any periods of study away from the campus (research furth of Glasgow) as authorised by the host College.
  • If the Scholar withdraws from study within 3 months of the Scholarship start date, project partners may re-advertise or seek to award the Scholarship to a reserve candidate, provided that they meet above eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities
You will be expected to contribute to the overall functioning of FESI by:

- Taking part in FESI’s Working Committees activities
- Assisting with organisation of events and meetings
- Providing administrative support
