Moderator: We're starting with questions concerning the application process.

Francis: Can I apply for a scholarship if I am not yet accepted at a German university?
Nicole Berners: You can apply for a DAAD scholarship before having received the admission but the scholarship is only valid if the university accepts your application.
LaViki: Pleaese explain the application process. How it starts from selecting a college through academic records to submission of papers to visa application? Which is the best university to apply for learning CFD, Aeronautics or FEA with an aggregate score of 70 percent?
Petra Schulze: First you should visit the website www.hochschulkompass.de for orientation about porgrams of universities. Then you should adress your favorite univerisity. they will lead you through the application process. Either you should apply through uni-assist or directly to the univerisity. Please pay attention to the language requirements English or German of the institutions. German language courses are offered for example at Giessen University www.uni-giessen.de/cms/internationales/sprachkurse.
Nicole Berners: Concerning the application procedure for a DAAD scholarship: At first you send your application to the DAAD branch office or the German embassy in your country: http://www.daad.de/stipendien/en/index.en.html. Under this link you will find the exact addresses and data. Secondly, a pre-selection takes place if your application is approved. The final selection is made thereafter by a committee of German university professors and you will be informed by the DAAD.
Eeliuchang: Is it possible to get the scholarship anytime in a year?
Nicole Berners: No, it depends on your country of origin and the scholarship programmee you wish to apply for under the following link: http://www.daad.de/stipendien/en/index.en.html. You can search for your programmee and you'll find all relevant data. In the main DAAD programmee concerning study scholarships usually the selection takes place ones a year in autumn.

Patbyte: Is there the age limit to obtain scholarships in Germany?
Nicole Berners: Generally no. In the DAAD programmees there is no age limit but usually the degree you have obtained should not be older than six years.
Anil6000: What are the documents needed along with the scholarship application?
Nicole Berners: This depends on the programmee you are interested in. Please check our scholarship database for more information: www.funding-guide.de. But in general it is neccessary to hand in your school leaving certificate, university degree, CV, language certificates, motivation letter and such.

Shankari: Does the scholarship application for next year close in this year itself?
Nicole Berners: Yes, if you wish to start your study programmee in next autumn you must have given up your documents by autumn this year.
Anil6000: is there any eligibility criteria for applying for scholarships?
Petra Schulze: Please pay attention that you really get admission for the program at univerisities for that you've got your scholarship. www.anabin.de is a good adress to find out the recognition of your degrees at German institutions.
Nicole Berners: Of course, please always check the detailed description of the programmee you wish to apply for in our database: www.funding-guide.de. As a rule in nearly all DAAD programmees you already have to be a graduate to be eligible to apply. Good grades won't hurt .  Depending on the study programmee it is neccessary to have a good level of German or English. It is important to give good reasons as to why you decided to apply for this particular programmee.
Jayeire: Can ERASMUS students apply for a scholarship? (I am currently on ERASMUS in Germany)
Nicole Berners: Sure, you can apply for a DAAD scholarship. Please note: You are only eligible to apply if you are in Germany less than a year. But, in the case you are selected for the scholarship
you have to decide: Either to accept the DAAD scholarship or to take the Erasmus option. It is not possible to combine both scholarships.
NAVEEN: Does the scholarship depend on the university or is it common for all universities ?
Petra Schulze: The DAAD will decide if you are selected for a scholarship. Then you can apply for your favorite university and program. The scholarship will be the same for all institutions.
Nicole Berners: In the application for the DAAD scholarship you have to select up to three study programmees you would wish to study. The selection committee proves your selection and makes a decision if they are appropriate. Once your scholarship has been awarded for a certain degree programmee you cannot change it without asking the DAAD for permission.
Ryan: How many years are the scholarship for master?
Nicole Berners: The scholarship for a master lasts for one or two years depending on the duration of the programmee but the scholarship is awarded in the beginning for one year. The prolongation depends on your academic results.
Michael: If I have already undertaken my first year of study of my M.A. is it too late to apply for a scholarship for the 2nd year?
Nicole Berners: Well, you can only apply within your first year in Germany so it might be too late by now.
Petra Schulze: Applications for scholarships of other institutions must often be adressed during the first semester. Please pay attention: Some universities offer final exam scholarships.
Prasiddha: Are there any foundations that provide scholarships to students from non-EU nations for studienkolleg?
Petra Schulze: I am afraid no.
Amit: I am studying with my wife at Hochschule Darmstadt. Are there any scholarships or stipends for couple students who are both studying?
Nicole Berners: I'm sorry but there are no special scholarships for couples only. If the DAAD scholar brings his or her wife/husband along, he can apply for a family allowance.
Petra Schulze: But of course your wife can apply, too, for a scholarship.

Ely: Is it better to get the scholarship before admission?
Petra Schulze: Generally, you first should apply for a scholarship and then or parallel you should apply for admission to universities.
Jomar: How many scholarships does the DAAD give every year?
Nicole Berners: You wouldn't believe it but it's quite a lot. Actually we have about 50.000 scholars every year.

Ryan: Does the scholarship include living costs?
Nicole Berners: The scholarship consists of a monthly sum. This sum should be enough to cover your monthly expenses.
Emily: Hello, my name is Emily. I am 23 years old and have a B.S. in Kinesiology from a University in the U.S. I have been accepted at the Friedrich Alexander Uni. I had to defer for a year because I did not have the funds to cover my living expenses. I am hoping you can give me information on grants, scholarships or even loans that I may be eligible for so that I may begin the program in 2012. Thank you!
Nicole Berners: Please have a look at our scholarship database: www.funding-guide.de. You can filter the results by home country and academic status. All the best!
Petra Schulze: Please pay attention that you have to apply to Fridrich Alexander Uni or another university once more.
Cameron W: Dear Frau Berners and Frau Schulze, I am a UK citizen living in Germany the past year, so now I cannot apply for the standard DAAD scholarship for foreigners. Do you know of any other scholarships I may be applicable for? Best wishes, Cameron
Nicole Berners: You may for example apply for a "Deutschlandstipendium": http://www.deutschland-stipendium.de/de/1685.php which is open to students from all nationalities.
Petra Schulze: During your first semesters you can apply for example to Konrad Adenauer, Friedrich Ebert or other institutions that offer scholarships. For this visit the data bank of DAAD.
Seyram: Dear Madam, I am a student of the University of Ghana in my final year studying a combined degree of English and Psychology. I will be completing my studies in may 2012. I want to know if I am eligible for a scholarship this academic year. Can you also tell me of my chances if my Gross Grade Point Average is 3.35 out of 4.0
Petra Schulze: First you should pass your final exams in 2012. Then you can apply in 2012 for a scholarship for Master Program which would start at 2013.
Nicole Berners: If you'd already like to know what funding opportunities you have, please search our database www.funding-guide.de for matching results.

Felix Barnes: Is it possible to get a scholarship for a summer school?
Nicole Berners: Yes, the DAAD has a special summer school programmee which you'll also find in our database. Just check it for detailed information on the application requirements: www.summerschools.de
Petra Schulze: We always have in our summer schools DAAD grantees.
Aley: Does DAAD give scholarship for Bachelor degree?
Nicole Berners: We are sorry but the DAAD generally does not award scholarships to bachelor students.
Felix Barnes: After completing school in Germany with a DAAD scholarship, when is the earliest you can apply for another DAAD scholarship?
Nicole Berners: You'll have to wait for three years after you've returned to your home country before you can apply again if you are interested in the DAADs re-invitation programmee for former scholarship holders.

Yejunzhou: Will DAAD give scholarship to Chinese student who want to apply for a master?
Petra Schulze: If you are eligible for Master Programs, yes.
Nicole Berners: Unfortunately there are no study scholarships for Chinese master students but still, have a look at our funding guide because there might be other organizations. In the future you may apply for a DAAD research grant to do a PhD programme.
NAVEEN: Does a good gre, tofel or ielts score improve our chances of getting a scholarship..?
Nicole Berners: Yes of course, especially if you want to enroll in an English study programme but your application as a whole is important.
Helen: Are there any scholarships for music students from non-EU countries?
Nicole Berners: The easiest way to find out is to search our scholarship database: www.funding-guide.de. The DAAD has a scholarship programmee specially for artists and architects which includes musicians. Of course, this programme is open for Non-EU students as well.
Moderator: Unfortunately, our time is nearly up. Is there anything, you would like to say in conclusion?
Nicole Berners: I would recommend to start searching for the right scholarship programme and study programme as early as possible and don't forget to check the visa conditions. Besides that: all the best and I hope you're going to have a great time in Germany.
Petra Schulze: Please begin one year in advance to prepare your applications for scholarships and for university admission. We are looking forward to your applications!
