The Robert Bosch Fellowship at Chatham House - scholars from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine

Call for Applications
The Robert Bosch Fellowship at Chatham House

Chatham House in partnership with the Robert Bosch Stiftung invites scholars from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine to apply for a Visiting Fellowship at Chatham House in London. The Fellowship is intended to provide an opportunity for the next generation of scholars from these countries to advance their knowledge of post-Soviet politics, develop research skills, contribute to Chatham House research, and build links with policy and academic communities in the UK, Germany and the EU. The Fellowship is aimed at future leaders, researchers and opinion-makers at the start of their careers.

Two successful applicants will spend six months each working at Chatham House with the Russia and Eurasia Programme team. During this time they will conduct a research project of their own design relating to the politics, economies and societies of the post-Soviet region. The Fellows will be expected to
  •  write a peer-reviewed Chatham House Briefing Paper based on their research;
  •  present their findings at an expert roundtable event;
  • contribute as necessary to other research projects and core work of the Russia and Eurasia Programme.
In the course of the Fellowship, the scholars will spend a two-week placement at a German think tank in Berlin. Funds will also be available for the Fellows to conduct a research trip to the region.

Research Project
Candidates must submit a proposal for a research project to be conducted during the Fellowship at Chatham House.

Possible research themes to be addressed include:
  •  Patterns of conflict and cooperation between the West and Russia;
  •  The future of Euro-Atlantic integration in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region;
  •  Prospects for economic growth and modernisation in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus;
  •  The Future of the Eastern Partnership and the EU’s relations with Russia;
  •  Prospects for democratization in the former Soviet Union;
  •  Conflict resolution and security in the post-Soviet space.
The parameters for the research proposal have been kept broad to allow applicants to devise a project which appeals to his/her research interests.

The Visiting Fellows will each receive a grant of 3,000 Euros per month (18,000 Euros in total per person). Travel costs to London and expenses relating to the placement in Germany and research trip will also be covered separately. Fellows must organise their own accommodation. If required, funds will be provided to cover hotel costs whilst permanent accommodation is located. There is no additional financial provision for the relocation of Fellows’ families.
