Intern- International Advocacy Programme
We are welcoming applications for the next round of volunteer
internships with the International Advocacy Programme in New York. This
office leads Amnesty International's work with the United Nation's
bodies and mechanisms.
The International Advocacy Programme (IAP) leads Amnesty International’s work at the United Nations to further the organization’s objectives as expressed in country and thematic strategies. IAP coordinates submission of information to UN bodies and mechanisms, organizes the participation of Amnesty International delegations in relevant meetings and monitors international developments relevant to the organization’s work. The IAP also coordinates a network of lobbyists (IGO coordinators) based in Amnesty International’s sections around the world and mobilizes Amnesty International members, on issues of concern being addressed by international organizations, to influence their decisions. The United Nations New York Office leads on work at the Security Council and the General Assembly.
We have one post now available. This internship is voluntary (unpaid), full time for a period of 6 months, to begin 14 July 2014 and end 16 January 2015. In our New York office, the successful applicant's return travel costs (as agreed in advance by the organization) are paid as well as an allowance to cover daily travel expenses and lunch. Interns play an integral role in the International Advocacy Programme, contributing to the teams' work through a mixture of long and short term projects. The tasls of the intern is supervised; however you are expected to work independently and use your own initiative. A background in law (in particular human rights law) or international relations to a graduate level is essential for this internship role. Some knowledge of international or regional intergovernmental organizations, as well as a working knowledge of the UN system, is useful.

Task List:
- Participate in lobbying efforts
- Monitor UN meetings and developments
- Provide desk-based research support to projects
- Liaise with diplomatic missions, the UN Secretariat and other NGOs
- Provide administrative support including database maintenance, record keeping and filing
- Coordinate with Amnesty International’s office in Geneva, the International Secretariat in London and Amnesty International Sections worldwide
- A background in law (particularly human rights law) or international relations to a graduate level
- Fluency in English: The working language of AI is English. A very good level of written and spoken English is required for interns in all locations
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Word and Excel): Much of our work is computerized and interns must be willing to be trained to work with the available information technology
- Ability to work independently and using own initiative
- Interns are required to comply with AI’s policy and rules relating
to Health and Safety, Cultural Diversity and Equal Opportunities and
with its security regulations
