Position Title: Non-remunerated Internship
Start date: May 2014
Duration of contract: 6 months

General functions:
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Head of the Policy & Programme Support Unit at IOM Brussels, the incumbent will undertake administrative follow-up and project development activities, and more specifically:
  • In coordination with the respective Regional Thematic Specialist, assist in updating the AVRR handbook;
  • Assist in liaising with world-wide IOM Missions on projects, policy issues and matters related to project development;
  • Assist in identifying donors’ priorities, strategies and related funding opportunities at the European institutional level;
  • Assist in drafting policy guidelines, feed-back, follow-up, statistics and reports on IOM activities, for internal and external distribution;
  • Provide support to IOM Missions in developing and preparing project proposals in compliance with the requirements of the European Commission (templates, EC rules, etc.);
  • Assist in following-up the work of all relevant committees and working groups relating to IOM activities, at the European institutions, including the EC, the EP and the Council;
  • Assist in undertaking research, data collection and analysis on current migratory situation and future prospects and trends, relevant to IOM activities, in the EU and in third countries;
  • Assist in organising information meetings, mailings and seminars in collaboration with appropriate entities, including the press, with the aim of disseminating information and updating external entities, existing and potential donors and partners on IOM activities;
  • Assist in drafting public information documents, website articles, press releases and information dissemination on IOM activities towards public and private EU partner-institutions;
  • Participate in meetings as required;
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Policy & Programme Support Unit, and any other tasks as may be required.
Internship training components / learning elements:
The intern will work for the IOM liaison office to the EU. The intern will not only become acquainted with the policies of IOM as an international organization, its multicultural environment and its functioning, but also learn more about the current EU policy discourse on migration. The intern will assist on subject areas such as migration and development, counter-trafficiking, technical cooperation on migration, labour migration and integration.
Desirable qualifications and experience:
a) University degree in European Studies, International Relations, Political Science, or Law; b) first work experience or internship with the EU environment related to migration would be a distinct advantage; c) knowledge of European institutions and policy in the fields of migration, development and/or foreign affairs; d) knowledge about EU budget rules and procedures an advantage; e) formal training and/or experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods is as advantage; f) good level of computer literacy; g) ability to understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios; h) ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds; i) proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines; j)Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English; working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is desirable.
