2014-2015 Fellowship Programme for European and North American Applicants in USA

Transatlantic Academy offers fellowships programme for European and North American applicants in USA. Fellowships are provided to examine the research theme, Religion and the Liberal Order. Applicants for senior fellowships must have a PhD and professional experience equivalent to that of an Associate Professor. Applicants who combine academic excellence with practical field or policy experience will have an advantage. Six fellowships are offered (three from Europe and three from North America).
About Scholarship: The Transatlantic Academy is seeking candidates to serve as resident Fellows from September 2014-June 2015 to examine the research theme, Religion and the Liberal Order. A joint project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, and the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the Transatlantic Academy is located at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington DC. Each year, the Academy brings together scholars from Europe and North America to work on a single set of issues facing the transatlantic community. The Academy is an interdisciplinary institution which is open to all social science disciplines, the humanities and the natural sciences. The Transatlantic Academy Fellows will spend the year both conducting their own individual research and in developing a collaborative research project which will result in a policy paper. The Academy invites proposals for research on one or more of the following questions:
• The role of religion in politics and the implications for liberal values: this will include an examination of the implications of the rise of the Christian right in the U.S., in contrast to secular Europe, and the role of Islamist political parties in the Arab Spring. What are the policy implications of the revival of religion for liberal values and political practice? Can there be a transatlantic dialogue on the policy relevance of religion?
• The role of religion in foreign policy: civil society groups and governments in the West try to export western values of religious freedoms around the world, from the Middle East and North Africa to Southeast Asia. What role does religion play in western foreign policy, as well as in the foreign policies of other countries around the world?
• Migration and religion in the West: how are migration patterns affecting the religious makeup of North American and European societies, and what are the social, cultural, and political implications? How have European states in particular been coping with an ever growing diversity of religions in their societies?
• Religion and the media: how is religion represented in the western media and what role do religious broadcasters play in certain parts of the world, such as the Middle East following the Arab Spring?
• Global Islam and its implications for the liberal order: is there an Islamist vision for the international system and what are the implications for the international liberal order?
• Are there significant differences between the three monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and others such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and others as they relate to foreign and domestic policy?
• What are the status of women and minorities (believers in other religions, as well as ethnic and sexual minorities) in world religions? Are they compatible with universally recognized human rights?
• Can religions achieve “an overlapping consensus” in the phrase of John Rawls, on certain
areas such as war and peace, human rights and international trade?
