Title: Intern, Immigration and Integration

Job Summary:
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.
GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship. In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies.
Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has seven offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, Bucharest, and Warsaw. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm. 
The Berlin office is seeking an energetic academic, ideally, pursuing a degree in Political Science or International Relations, preferably with a focus on immigration and integration, or another related field. The internship will focus on gaining in-depth knowledge of the foundation. S/he will assist GMF Immigration staff in Berlin and Washington, DC. 
The objectives of the internship are, primarily, to provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical work experience to supplement their academic program for future work in a field related to the GMF’s mission; and to work in an international environment on political issues in order to gain experience working in a mutual learning and knowledge sharing environment with world experts. 
Key Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Research and provide logistical support for GMF’s immigration event series;
  • Conduct background research on immigration and integration issues in Europe and the United States; and
  • Assist on various administrative tasks, as needed. 

Qualifications and Requirements: 
  • Candidate pursuing a graduate degree in International Relations, Political Science, or another related field.
  • Excellent organizational skills combined with the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of small team.
  • Fluency in English and proficiency in German language skills required. 

Start and Length of Internship:
Preferred starting date: January 2013
Preferred length of internship: A minimum of 3 months (preferably 6 months) full-time
Pay rate: 400 € per month
