Internship (EU Internal Affairs & Fundraising)

The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is seeking an intern for the IRCT Liaison Office in Brussels from 16 September 2013 to 15 March 2014, ideally.
The IRCT is an independent, international health professional umbrella organisation, which promotes and supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and works for the prevention of torture worldwide.
Based in Denmark, the IRCT supports and collaborates with a global network of 144 rehabilitation centres and programmes, represented in every region of the world.
While recognising the special responsibility of the health professions in the rehabilitation and prevention of torture, the IRCT strongly advocates that the work against torture requires the efforts of all, at every level of society. The IRCT Liaison Office in Brussels is in charge of the following tasks:
  • Lobbying towards EU institutions for increased consideration of torture-related issues in EU internal and external policy (implementation of EU guidelines on torture, funding to rehabilitation centres, inclusion of fight against torture in country strategy papers or resolutions, inclusion of favourable conditions in asylum laws, etc.);
  • Mobilising EU support for IRCT projects and initiatives, in particular via fundraising applications & lobbying on financial issues;
  • Assisting rehabilitation centres for victims of torture in their relations with EU institutions and Commission delegations and by informing them of relevant EU policy or funding opportunities;
  • Networking with relevant NGOs.

Responsibilities

Direct support to Head of IRCT Liaison Office who is also Head of Donor Relations Team, including:
  • Supporting donor relation activities: research & analyse funding opportunities, draft fundraising proposals, support IRCT member centres in their own fundraising efforts, etc.;
  • Following up and inputting on asylum, migration and fundamental rights issues by following policy developments and attending relevant meetings (NGO coalitions, European Parliament hearings or sessions, European Commission meetings, etc., );
  • Drafting meeting reports & contributing to the IRCT newsletter;
  • Supporting the implementation of projects;
  • Supporting the IRCT lobbying strategy (drafting letters, statements, articles, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of EU institutions and policies, in particular on asylum and fundamental rights issues;
  • Good background in EU and international law;
  • Fluent English, fluent French, other languages an asset;
  • Sensitivity to NGO concerns and functioning.
