2013 PhD Studentship for Home and EU Applicants at University of Kent in UK

School of Engineering & Digital Arts, University of Kent is offering PhD studentship in the UK. Applicants of EU/Home are eligible for this PhD studentship. PhD studentship covers a non-taxable subsistence allowance, a separate budget for IT equipment, software and travel to conferences and project meetings and a full tuition fee for the registration period of 36 months. Submit online application by 16th September 2013.
About Scholarship: The Smart Autonomous Vehicle for Urban Mobility using Renewable Energy (SAVEMORE) project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund’s Interreg IVA Programme, and it represents a major collaboration between the University of Kent and French partner Higher Education institutions. The project aims to address technological barriers inhibiting the uptake of new technological advances addressing issues related to the use of robotic (unmanned) electric light goods vehicles (LGVs – small trucks) aiming to deliver commercial goods to businesses within the restricted urban environments of busy and, in some cases, historic city centers (such as the city centers of Canterbury in the UK, and Rouen in France).
To achieve this SAVEMORE aims to model and integrate in to a novel framework existing and new technical solutions such as wireless sensor networks (including GPS and on-board vehicle sensors – e.g. LIDARs, etc.), autonomous robotic car localization, path planning, and path optimization, autonomous and semi-autonomous electric energy demand and distribution optimization, and the provision of efficient secure communications among the related subsystems.
Large scale use of electrical vehicles in towns coupled with the production of renewable energy appear to be a powerful way to help local authorities in achieving the European agenda for low carbon emissions, air pollution reduction and energy saving. SAVEMORE aims to develop and promote new concepts of electro mobility for delivery of goods in cities, using transfer of research in areas of autonomous robotics, IT systems, and complex systems modeling. The University of Kent will contribute to several areas within the project and the studentships will be associated with the following: Modeling the effects of using electric autonomous delivery vehicles.
