BIG PLANS FOR PORTSMOUTH

Council and business leaders are pointing to a bright future for Portsmouth's economy.

Shaping the future of  Portsmouth, a group of key local organisations and businesses brought together by the council, says the good news includes:
* determination from the developer of the Northern Quarter to carry on with the city centre scheme
* a new Mary Rose museum opening in 2012
* a new 33-storey university building and two hotels planned for the city centre
* regeneration under way in Somerstown
* progress on plans to redevelop Tipner
* plans to redevelop former dockyard land if it's released by the MoD
* plans to redevelop Guildhall Square and improve links between the city centre and The Hard
* new aircraft carrier construction under way
* a growing creative and cultural scene
* pioneering work by the council on new ways to fund regeneration

Cllr Mike Hancock, the council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: "Portsmouth is on the up and very much open for business."
