NU-WIDER PhD Internship Programme

The PhD Internship Program allows registered doctoral students the chance to take advantage of the facilities and other resources at UNU-WIDER for their PhD research thesis or dissertation along with the opportunity to collaborate with UNU-WIDER researchers in relative areas. These PhD interns will spend on average three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER. During their time in Finland, PhD interns will prepare one or more research papers to give a seminar on their findings. These interns will also get the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.
In order to apply, an applicant needs to already be enrolled in a PhD program and must have conducted research on developing economies. Those candidates that are working in different social studies can apply, but this is an economic-focused facility. Candidates need to be fluent in written and oral English and have good analytical skills. Those living and/or working in developing companies who are in later stages of their PhD will be given preference for this program.
If accepted, interns will be given a grant to cover any costs of travel to and from the location of their PhD institution, insurance for medical and hospital services, and a monthly stipend of €1,600 to cover any living expenses while in Helsinki during their internship.
In order to apply, applicants must apply for the position online as this is the only way UNU-WIDER accepts applications and only does so twice a year. The deadlines for each submission are March 31 and September 30. When applying during the month of September, applicants will be going to UNU-WIDER during February to June of the year that follows, and if one applies in March, they would be going to UNU-WIDER from the months of August to November that same year of application.
It is important to understand that the online application form will only go live one month before the deadline for the application’s submission. As a part of the application, you will need to send in your curriculum vitae. Your PhD supervisor must give UBU-WIDER a letter of reference that needs to be emailed by your supervisor and will be used to certify that you have enrolled in a PhD program at your current university. Emails will not be received by post or by email. Those who have been selected for the program will be told of their final decision by way of email within four weeks of the closing deadline. These applicants have to confirm their decision to take the offer made by UNU-WIDER two weeks after contact.
