Description
Department of Food, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is
offering a PhD scholarship in Food Science commencing February 1st 2017 or
as soon as possible thereafter.
The PhD student will be part of the EU-funded project “European Joint Doctorate in Food Science” (EJDFoodSci). EJDFoodSci is an Innovative Training Network (ITN) concerning the challenges malting and brewing. The scientific objective of the project is to reduce the environmental impact of malt and beer production by introducing innovative technologies that reduce energy consumption, whilst maintaining or improving their flavour quality and stability. The current PhD project (ESR2) focuses on malts for control of trace elements with pro-oxidative effects during the brewing process and in finished beer. The current project is offered as joint degree PhD project together with UA Krakow.

The project will assess the possibility to obtain beer with
improved flavour stability by setting up schemes for minimising the levels of
prooxidants in beer. This will include characterization of important
prooxidants in malt, wort and beer, their distributions and their chemical
interactions.
The key tasks as a PhD student at Science are:
Manage and carry through your research project;
Take PhD courses at EJDFoodSci partners;
Write scientific papers and your PhD thesis;
Participate in international congresses;
The successful candidate must be ready to visit both
academic and industrial EJDFoodSci partners during the project;
Teach and disseminate your research.
Eligibility
Master degree related to the subject area of the project
(e.g. Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, pharmaceutical science and
chemical engineering);
Any nationality;
A good understanding of multivariate data analysis, design
of experiments and database creation;
Strong communication skills;
Interest in working in a cross-disciplinary environment;
Academic record;
Relevant work experience;
Other professional activities;
Language skills, fluency in English is essential.
Scholarship
The position is available for a 3-year period;
At the time of selection by the host organization,
researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work,
studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately
prior to their recruitment;
Specific for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs, PhD positions):
At the time of recruitment, it is a requirement that PhD candidates have not
been awarded a doctorate degree and are in the first 4 years (full-time
equivalent) their research careers;
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure
for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment is according to the agreement
between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The salary is according to
standardised EU rules for ITN grants and the appointment terms are consistent
with the current rules for PhD degree students.
