Model European Union 2012

Model European Union (MEU) is a unique simulation of EU decision-making and politics, taking place annually in Strasbourg; a city that carries a lot of symbolism in relation to peace and democracy in Europe.
MEU 2012, the sixth edition of MEU, will once again bring together 180 young Europeans in the premises of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Their mission shall be to simulate the EU law-making and decision-making process as professionally as possible.
In MEU 2012, participants will have the opportunity to debate two real-life legislative proposals drafted by the European Commission. In so doing, they will bring to life two different legislative procedures: the ordinary legislative procedure and the consultation procedure.
MEU 2012 is open to any young people from the EU or any EFTA state, as well as candidate countries (Croatia, Turkey) who are curious about the functioning of the European Institutions and who want to actively take part in a lifelike simulation.
People from 18 to 26 years old are most welcome to MEU 2012. A suitable applicant is a tolerant and open person who is much into debating and exchanging viewpoints. An important trait would also be both the sociability and curiosity of the applicant towards others. Being able to actively participate to a debate and relate to others is definitely the key point of getting a lot out of the simulation and enjoying this incredible experience.

MEU 2012 being a simulation of the European institutions, each and every participant will be given a role, according to their choice, to ensure the closest adequacy with the actual institutions.
Every role offers different opportunities in terms of simulation experience. Not only should an MEP, a Minister or a Lobbyist be a good speaker, but also be able to shrewdly interact with other MEPs/Ministers/Lobbyists to try and convince them. A journalist will need to astutely choose whom to interview, observe everything and relate all events. Interpreters will be absolutely necessary to ensure a perfect understanding during debates and avoid any dialogue of the deaf. Each role is mostly important and a good handling of them will result in a passionate and thrilling simulation.

Application form here

In order to successfully complete your application, you must:
- Fill out the Application form
- Write a short motivation for every role you apply to

It is not envisaged that the Goethe-Institut will finance the full costs of the translation or printing or editorial costs.

Application

The following documents are required:
  • a fully completed application form;
  • a legally valid licence agreement;
  • a legally valid translator’s contract;
  • justification of the project with information on the relevance of the work to the target sales audience, how it fits into the publisher’s list, and on why financial support is required
  • two copies of the German edition of the publication plus reviews. (Books and reviews should be requested from the German publisher and then forwarded to the Munich Central Office of the Goethe-Institut, Bereich 33, Literatur und Übersetzungsförderung.
Please submit the application form to the Goethe-Institut in your country. If there is no Goethe-Institut in your country, please contact the German embassy.
The Goethe-Institut in your country will evaluate your application. If an application is successful, the Goethe-Institut will forward the documents, together with a supporting statement, to the central office of the Goethe-Institut in Munich. There a committee will decide on the value of the sum to be granted. If an application is rejected, the Goethe-Institut in your country will inform you directly.
Application deadlines:
The committee meets four times a year as follows:
  • End of January: fiction; literature for children and young adults
  • End of April: all categories
  • End of July: fiction; literature for children and young adults
  • End of October: all categories
Next meeting:
The Goethe-Instituts accept applications all year round. They are dealt with at the next meeting due to take place. However, please note that applications which arrive less than four weeks before the next due meeting in Munich cannot usually be taken into consideration.
For academic works longer submission deadlines apply because a validation from the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (German research organisation) is required. In order to be able to process your application at the April meeting, the documents should have arrived by the 31st January at the Goethe-Institut’s central office, and for the October meeting by the 31st July.

6th Global Conference: Multiculturalism, Conflict and Belonging, Oxford, UK

Deadline: 16 March 2012
Open to: All interested scholars
Venue: 16th  September 2012 – 19th September 2012 Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

Description

This multi-disciplinary project seeks to explore the new and prominent place that the idea of culture has for the construction of identity and the implications of this for social membership in contemporary societies. In particular, the project will assess the context of major world transformations, for example, new forms of migration and the massive movements of people across the globe, as well as the impact of globalisation on tensions, conflicts and on the sense of rootedness and belonging. Looking to encourage innovative trans-disciplinary dialogues, we warmly welcome papers from all disciplines, professions and vocations which struggle to understand what it means for people, the world over, to forge identities in rapidly changing national, social andcultural contexts.
Papers, workshops and presentations are invited on any of the following themes:
1. Challenging Old Concepts of Self and Other
  • Who is Self and who is Other?
  • The new value of social diversity and cultural multiplicity; breaking with homogeneity and sameness
  • What is the place of difference and alterity, of normality and normalisation in defining identity and membership
  • How to account for social membership and cultural identity?
  • Making sense of transformations and their effects over culture, identity and membership
  • Othering, excluding, stygmatising
2. Nations, Nationhood and Nationalisms
  • What does it mean, today, to belong to a nation?
  • New migrants, new migratory flows and massive movements from peripheral to central countries
  • Resurgence of the local and the diminishing importance of the national
  • Are we living post-national realities?
  • What is the place of cultural claims in today’s forms of social membership?
  • Models of multiculturalism and the contemporary experience of multiculturalism(s)
  • Assimilation, integration, adaptation and other forms of placing the responsibility of change on the Other
3. Institutions, Organizations and Social Movements
  • Evaluating the promises and institutions of post-national governing
  • Institutions and organisations that do more for money than for people
  • Political battles over globalization
  • Social movements, new rebellion and alternative globalizations
  • Trans-cultural connections that escape institutional and political intentions or control
  • New forms of global exclusion
4. Persons, Personhood and the Inter-Personal
  • De-centering individuals and the making of persons; thinking and acting with others in mind and interpersonally
  • Tensions, contradictions and conflicts of identity formation and social membership
  • New sources and forms of belonging; new tribalism, localism, parochialism and communitarianism
  • Bonds of care across boundaries of inequality and exclusion, ideologies and religions, politics and power, nations andgeography
  • Who am I if not the relation with others?
  • Non-recognition as cultural violence
5. Media and Artistic Representations
  •  The role of new and old media in the construction of cultures and identities, of nations and place
  • Production and reproduction of cultural typing and stereotyping
  • The contested space of representing culture, identity and belonging
  • Art, media and how to challenge the rigid and impenetrable constructions of culture
  • Living, being and belonging through art
  • Life imitating art and fiction
6. Transnational Cultural Interlacing of Contemporary Life
  • What is shared from cultures? How are cultures shared? Who has access to the sharing of cultures?
  • Cultural claims and human rights
  • Exploring multiculturalism as a plural experience: Shouldn’t we be talking about multiculturalisms?
  • Living in a context with the cultural markers of a different context: Is that transculturalism?
  • Languages, idioms and new emerging forms of wanting to bridge the ‘invisible’ divide of cultures
  • Symbols and significations that connect people to places other than ‘their own’
  • Culture, identity and belonging by choice
7. New Concepts, New Forms of Inclusion
  • Recognition and respect without exclusion
  • An ethics for social relations in a new millennium
  • What to do with historically old concepts like tolerance, acceptance and hospitality?
  • Should not we all be strangers? Should not we all be foreigners?
  • Is there any use for cosmopolitanism these days?
  • Loving the other within the self; building fluid boundaries of belonging and being
The 2012 meeting of Multiculturalism, Conflict and Belonging will run alongside the forth meeting of our project on Fashion – Exploring Critical Issues and we anticipate holding sessions in common between the two projects.  Any papers considering the problems or addressing issues of Fashion, Multiculturalism, Conflict and Belonging are welcomed.
