The Amnesty International European Institutions Office (EIO) is
looking for a trainee to work on business and human rights, and Roma
inclusion to join our team in Brussels from mid September 2013 for 10
months.
Amnesty International is advocating for the EU to achieve better corporate accountability. For the period 2013/2014 our work will focus on the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights at the EU level, particularly non-financial reporting, due diligence, the state-business nexus and access to remedy. In the area of Roma inclusion, our lobbying focus will be on the improvement of National Roma Integration Strategies and EU instruments to fight discrimination.
After an induction period, the trainee is expected to work independently, represent Amnesty International towards Institutions and take on responsibility for certain dossiers. The trainee reports to the Economic, Social and Cultural Executive Officer.

TASKS INCLUDE
1. Policy
- Mapping EU policy and legislative developments in the two areas of the portfolio;
- Preparation, assistance and follow-up of advocacy activities towards the EU institutions;
- Communication with external stakeholders (EU institutions and advocacy partners);
- Preparing responses to queries and requests from the EU institutions and AI offices;
- Compiling statistics and other information for media inquiries;
- Conducting research on an ad-hoc basis for pressing questions and in-depth for relevant publications;
- Providing summaries of policy documents and case law;
- Carrying out ad-hoc legal analyses of certain cases.
- Monitoring relevant EU legislation and policy;
- Monitoring European Parliament meetings in Brussels;
- Attending relevant conferences, seminars and hearings in Brussels;
- Compiling information for EU updates to AI national sections and structures;
- Assisting the Executive Officer in other tasks.
- Updating and maintaining files, databases and mailing lists;
- Sending out briefings/letters/Annual Reports;
- Drafting the monthly newsletter;
- Taking minutes and write reports of meetings and events;
- Assisting with presentations and organisation of events and meetings;
- Assisting with other administrative tasks.
- In-depth knowledge in the area of business and human rights and/or Roma inclusion policies;
- Knowledge of EU institutions or previous working experience at EU level;
- Strong writing skills in English;
- Experience in supporting advocacy, lobbying and/or policy making;
- Interest in human rights displayed through professional or voluntary activities;
- Ability to manage varied workload effectively and conflicting demands;
- Good planning and organising skills;
- Standard computer skills (knowledge of Windows, Word, Internet Explorer).
