Alfa Fellowship Program for Journalists

Description

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a development exchange program placing qualified young media professionals in organizations in Russia. It is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Its goal is to develop greater intercultural understanding and advance U.S.-Russian, U.K.-Russian and German-Russian relations. The next program will run from March 2017 to April 2018 and includes intensive Russian language training, seminar series and extended professional experience. 

Eligibility

Candidates must be U.S., U.K. or German citizens;

Russian language proficiency is preferred but not required;

Journalists must have at least two years of experience if they have a graduate degree or six years of journalism experience if they don’t.

Fellowship

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend, all program related-travel costs, free housing and insurance.

Paid traineeship opportunity for journalists

The Communications Service of the European University Institute, based in Florence (Italy) is looking for one journalist to carry out the following daily tasks:

 Write and report on EUI academic activities and EUI special events;

 Assist the EUI web team in the development of online media content, including online advertising campaigns and social media;

 Monitor international media;

 Edit a range of texts by Institute staff, including webpages, official announcements and internal reports;

 Assist in project management and websites run by the Communications Service;

 Occasional photography and involvement in producing videos and podcasts.

The duration of the traineeship is 12 months. The first three months of which constitute a trial period. Full time (Monday to Friday).

From May 2016 to May 2017 Conditions for Eligibility Candidates must:

A) Be nationals of a European Union member state, or of a candidate country which benefits from a pre-accession strategy (nationals of non-member states may be accepted depending on resources available);

AND;

B) Are studying for a first (post-secondary education) degree and are in the process of obtaining the qualification; OR
C) Are involved in a vocational training programme; OR
D) Have obtained the above (B or C) qualification, no longer than 18 months prior to the beginning of the traineeship;

AND;

E) Have a thorough knowledge of English (native speaker or equivalent certified level, C2). Knowledge of another European language may be an advantage but this is not a requirement (it should be taken into account that English, French and Italian are the main working languages at the EUI).

Description

Journalism fellowships at Stanford started in 1966 with a powerful idea: giving reporters and editors free run of the classrooms and libraries of a great university, which would pay off in superb journalism.

Each year, the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships selects 20 fellows to spend an academic year at Stanford University. During their fellowship, they have access to some of the world’s most innovative thinkers and organizations, from technology giants to hot new startups to Stanford’s 100-plus special institutes and centers.

They select journalists with great ideas they will pursue while in our program and beyond. Recent fellows have launched journalism startups, created cross-border investigative reporting partnerships, crafted tools to enhance reporting on immigrant communities, to cite a few examples. Others have been sought out  to lead innovation in established news organizations. 

Their fellows come from all over the world and from all types of journalism, including daily newspapers, radio and television, non-profit news startups, blogs and ethnic media. 

Eligibility

They are seeking a pool of applicants who are diverse in all ways: race, ethnicity, gender, media background, region of the country, regions of the world, perspectives and life experiences.

Ideally, US candidates should have at least seven years of experience, and international candidates should have at least five years of experience.

Fellowship

Fellows receive a stipend of USD 65,000 as well as supplements for housing, childcare, health insurance and moving expenses. Tuition costs at Stanford are also covered.

2014 Knight-Bagehot Fellowship at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in USA

Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is offering fellowship for qualified journalists in business, economics and finance in a year-long, full-time program in the USA. Ten journalism fellowships are awarded each year. Fellows receive free tuition plus a stipend to offset living expenses in New York City. For the 2014 academic year, a stipend of $55,000 will be granted to each fellow. Housing is available in a Columbia-affiliated facility. Applicants must have at least four years of experience. Advanced Training Programme for a Young Journalist to be seconded by a News Agency (Deadline: 15 November, 2013)

In order to strengthen the area of communication and media relations and provide more visibility to the CEI, the CEI Secretariat has developed appropriate media relations  in connection with CEI events, activities and projects, including EU-funded projects.
Media relations have been further enhanced also thanks to specific activities, such as the South East Europe Media Forum and the CEI Award for Outstanding Merits in Journalism. In order to better reach the media of the CEI region, a special partnership has also been established with the Italian National News Agency – ANSA, the second news agency in Europe and the fourth worldwide, with offices in 74 countries.
In this context, the CEI Secretariat intends to establish an Advanced Training Programme for a Young Journalist from a news agency of a CEI Member State to be seconded to the CEI Secretariat. The selected candidate will cooperate with the CEI staff and ANSA staff in Trieste for the initial phase of operation of the ANSA New Europe Portal and its development. He/She will also carry out tasks linked to communication and information as well as other CEI activities in the field of media.
The training programme – addressed to young journalists (no more than 35 years of age) with an excellent knowledge of English and a good knowledge of Italian – will last for a period of seven months (renewable for another seven months). The selected candidate will be granted a (non taxable) fellowship of €1.500,00 per month.
The selection procedure will be in compliance with that provided for the implementation of EC co-funded projects. The evaluation – on the basis of competitive merit – will be concluded before the end of December 2013 and the training is foreseen to start in Trieste before the end of January 2014.

Radcliffe Institute offers fellowships to journalists [Worldwide]

Journalists and film, video, sound and new media artists can apply for this fellowship.
The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions and creative arts.
Stipends are funded up to US$70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early Sept. 2014 through May 31, 2015.
Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s record of achievement and promise.
Visual, film, video, sound, and new media artists may apply for either one or two semesters.

Study: The fellowship is awarded in media and journalism. Fellows work in the open by sharing their code and their discoveries, helping to strengthen and build journalism’s toolbox.
Course Level: Knight Foundation offers 10 months fellowship with six news organizations around the world.

Location: In 2014, the Fellows will be based with: USA (The New York Times and ProPublica in New York,The Texas Tribune in Austin, Texas), Argentina (La Nacion in Buenos Aires) and a joint fellowship with Ushahidi and Internews Kenya. 
Eligibility:-We are an international program (our six news partners cover three continents) and welcome participants from around the world.
-You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to participate in the program.
-We assist Fellows with any necessary visa applications for working and traveling during the Fellowship.
-Perfect English is not a requirement, however please be aware that it may be challenging to participate in some aspects of our program if your English is limited.
Women and other under-represented participants in technology are strongly encouraged to apply for a Knight-Mozilla Fellowship.

Number of awards: Organizations around the world will be hosting five Knight-Mozilla Fellows in 2014.
Duration: 10 months 
Value: The standard Fellowship offers a stipend of $60,000 paid in 10 monthly installments. Mozilla may, in consultation with Fellows and News Partners, elect to vary the amount and duration to accommodate the needs and availability of individual fellows and newsrooms. To help offset cost of living in the News Partner location cities, the Fellowship also provides supplements for housing, childcare, health insurance, moving expenses, and helps pay for research/equipment and books. The Fellowship also covers the costs of required travel for Fellowship activities.
Notification: Finalists will be notified by early October and a public announcement of our 2014 fellows will be made at the Mozilla Festival in London October 25, 2013.

Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellowship

RFE/RL is pleased to accept applications for the 2013 - 2014 Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellowship.  The Fellowship is a joint program between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and RFE/RL that is inspired by the former president’s belief in the transformational role of journalism in challenging tyranny.  It provides direct work experience and mentoring at RFE/RL’s Prague headquarters to journalists from countries in RFE/RL’s broadcast region where media freedom is stifled.

The Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for journalists to receive on-the-job training while working alongside RFE/RL’s seasoned professionals in Prague and in RFE/RL’s local bureaus. Fellows will be integrated into RFE/RL language services and participate actively in multi-media programming and reporting. They will also represent themselves, RFE/RL and the Fellowship at public events and in discussions relating to media conditions in their country. Fellowships last nine months, including time spent in country in RFE/RL’s local bureau and in the Prague broadcasting headquarters, and include a stipend, housing and travel arrangements to and from Prague.

Eligibility:
The program is open to promising journalists with English-language proficiency from the Russian Federation and the Eastern Partnership Countries: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis in accordance with the application process described below.

2) Personal Statement
Your personal statement should be written in English.  It should describe your journalistic experience, your specific interest in the Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellowship, and career goals in 750 words or less. This is a very important part of your application and will be thoroughly read and considered in the selection process.   Please consider:  What experiences in journalism have influenced you?  What values and interests motivate you to seek a continued career in journalism?   What are your strongest professional skills?   What experience, skills, etc., do you intend to gain from your fellowship? How would you like to see your career path develop?  What do you hope to accomplish through your career in journalism?

3) Work Samples
Please attach 2-3 work samples demonstrating your journalistic skill and ability. At least one of the samples must have been published within the year of the deadline. All samples must include a date and, if not in English, they must be accompanied by an English translation. Samples cannot be returned.

4) Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required with your application. One of your letters should be from a current supervisor or from a colleague who practices journalism. The writers should explain their relationship to you, confirm your qualifications, potential for professional growth and development, and why you are an excellent candidate for the fellowship.

2013 USC Annenberg Getty Arts Journalism Fellowship Program

USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Getty Foundation is funding arts journalism fellowship program in USA.US and International Applicants (critics or reporters or bloggers, and generalists or specialists. Staffs journalists, affiliated freelancers and independents) are eligible for this journalism fellowship. The fellowship covers airfare, accommodation, most meals, reading materials, internet access in hotel room and transportation within Los Angeles.  
About Scholarship: The 2013 USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program is a fellowship for arts, culture and entertainment editors, producers and writers. During this intense ten-day program, fellows will attend performances and exhibitions, and visit private studios, rehearsal rooms, architectural firms and art schools for behind-the-scenes opportunities to meet renowned artists, arts directors, curators, administrators and accomplished journalists. 
There will also be a Think & Do workshop in conjunction with the Annenberg Innovation Lab, and other opportunities for balancing meaningful face-to-face dialogue with skill-building practice. Fifteen arts journalists who bring distinction to the field will be chosen from the international applicant pool. The fellowship accepts applicants who practice journalism online and in print, radio and/or television. Their areas of expertise may include architecture, literature, film, pop culture, the visual and performing arts. They can be critics or reporters or bloggers, and generalists or specialists. Staff journalists, affiliated freelancers and independents are welcome to apply. The fellowship is also interested in journalists who are artists. And in artists who are journalists.

•committed to imaginatively finding, adapting and integrating existing digital tools with a focus on ideas/intent behind what is developed rather than specific ways to realize them. Other standard requirements:
•All critics, reporters, writers, bloggers, columnists, editors, broadcasters or producers who specialize in arts, culture or entertainment for an online, newspaper, magazine or broadcast media organization MAY apply.
•The program is NOT intended for entry-level journalists, students or journalism educators.
•Staff, freelancers and self-employed journalists, designers and developers ARE welcome.
•Journalists who are, or have been, professional or amateur artists are encouraged to apply.
•Artists who are, or have been, professional or amateur arts writers, critics, reporters or editors, are encouraged to apply.
•This is a NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL program, applicants from anywhere may apply. Typically one to two finalists come from outside the United States.
•Advanced degrees or specialized training in the arts are NOT required.
