Internship - Safer Schools Programme Plan

Working in 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas, Plan’s stated Global Strategic Goal (2011-15) is to reach as many children as possible, particularly those who are excluded or marginalised, with high-quality programmes that deliver long-lasting benefits. Plan aims to achieve this goal by working in partnership with others and through high performing teams whose behaviours reflect the corporate values. It has a global income of around $800m.
Plan is committed to working towards ensuring that children and youth grow up safely in resilient communities. A key element of Plan’s work toward this goal is our Safe Schools Global Programme. Plan’s work on Safe Schools aims to improve the safety, accessibility, sustainability and relevance of education in the context of disasters, while building a culture of safety and contributing to the resilience of children and their communities.
Plan is seeking an intern to support the work of the Safe Schools Global Programme. The Safe Schools intern will be based in the Disaster Risk Management team at International Headquarters (IH) and report to the Climate Change Policy Officer.
The intern will assist with the ongoing work of Plan’s Safe Schools Global Programme.
Typical responsibilities will include:
    Researching existing safe schools resources
    Contributing to the design of knowledge management tools to share resources across Plan.
    Collating case studies of good practice in safe schools and adapting them for publication.
    Supporting Plan’s Resilience Community of Practice.
    Communications about Plan’s Safe Schools Global Programme using social media.
Knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the post;
    Fluent written and spoken English skills
    Demonstrated interest and ideally academic background in disaster risk reduction, development or humanitarian issues.
    Good research and analytical skills;
    Excellent IT skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with SharePoint would be an advantage.
    Experience using social media.
    Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from different cultures with integrity and honesty;
    An enthusiastic team player with the ability to use own initiative;
    An understanding and commitment to the aims and values of Plan;
    An understanding and commitment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child;
Location and Travel: Based in Woking, Surrey. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.
Reports to: Climate Change Policy Officer, Disaster Risk Management Team
Duration: 12 week internship.
Expenses: Up to £6 daily lunch allowance and reasonable travel expenses of up to £20 per day paid.

Volunteer interns must be eligible to reside and volunteer in the UK to apply.
