Applicants from developing countries

Scholarship applicants must apply to a graduate course and must be a citizen of a developing country, preferably from one of NORAD's partnership countries. The applicant should apply directly from his/her home country and must return to his/her home country after studying at the ISS. However, exceptions to this rule may apply. The applicant should be able to demonstrate the benefits from the course at ISS in his/her future career.

Applicants from Caucasus and the Balkans

Scholarship applicants must be citizens of a state in the Caucasus region(Azerbaijan, Armenia or Georgia) or the former Yugoslavia (Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro; excluding Slovenia). The applicants may apply to one Master's coure or up to three Bachelor's courses. The applicant must be a relevant candidate for the Nansen Dialog Network.

Applicants from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Applicants from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe can apply to scholarships for both Master's and Bachelor's courses. Applicants from Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria) may apply for scholarships which generally cover only the ISS Basic Fee.

Applicants from the US and Canada

A limited number of scholarships, which come mostly from donations and private scholarship funds, are available to at the Master and Bachelor level. These scholarships are reserved for citizens of the USA or Canada. The majority are partial scholarships. You can request a scholarship application for North American students when you complete the Pre-Application.

ISS Scandinavian Studies scholarships

Applicants must take Scandinavian studies in their home country and apply for a relevant course(s) at the ISS. Applicants who have a strong reason to study in Norway may also apply for this scholarship (e.g. researchers/students who in their area focus on Scandinavian area studies, but are not themselves Scandinavianists). Applicants from any country may apply for this type of scholarship, but a priority is given to applicants from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Spain.

ISS Open Scholarships

Every year the ISS offers scholarships to exceptional applicants who do not fall under any of the categories. A typical recipient is a very strong applicant to a graduate course who is not from a NORAD partnership country (e.g. in South America or the Middle East) or a candidate who receives a partial scholarship from one of our cooperation partners.
