Volunteer - European Union Amnesty International

The EU team at is looking for a volunteer to assist team members with various tasks, mostly for administrative and research assistance. The team requests a minimum commitment of three months, two or three days per week.
The volunteer will assist team members with their work on EU countries primarily the United Kingdom and France. The volunteer will have the opportunity to use his or her language skills by assisting with press monitoring and basic research for these EU countries, on a variety of issues where we have ongoing research projects and campaigns.
Most of the volunteers’ tasks will be of an administrative nature, particularly at the start, but will vary according to the volunteer’s knowledge and experience. Other work might be however requested, such as carrying out basic research, translation and liaising with contacts in the country. The routine tasks (listed below) may vary according to the team’s priorities and to the volunteer’s experience. The volunteer will be given appropriate training to enable him/her to complete the assigned tasks.
This volunteer position would particularly suit students studying human rights, politics, law or journalism.
Role profile of the volunteer/intern:
Voluntary work at Amnesty International can provide valuable experience and you will receive work references. However, please note that volunteering does not lead directly to employment with Amnesty International.
Voluntary work is unpaid, although travel and lunch expenses are provided. We are able to offer only very limited advice in terms of finding accommodation or employment in London. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own UK visa/work permit before arriving in the UK. AI can provide a supporting letter on request.

Task List
  •  Research of information on the internet or via phone. The volunteer could be asked to perform searches through relevant governmental and non-governmental websites, and download information. The volunteer could also be required to phone contacts/institutions/agencies to search for/check information.
  •  Transcribing recordings of interviews
  •  Press monitoring and filing. The volunteer will assist with the daily monitoring and electronic filing of the press.
  •  Correspondence. The volunteer will support the team members by translating and summarising correspondence into English, where necessary. The volunteer could be occasionally asked to draft replies to letters from the public, as instructed by the team members. All information to members of the public (letters, faxes, emails, documents) must be agreed with the team before being sent out.
  •  Filing and organizational assistance. Some filing and photocopying of AI’s documents and correspondence might be occasionally required.
  •  Providing logistical assistance, where needed, for team members undertaking field research missions
Essential skills and experience
  •  Excellent spoken and written level of English and French.
  •  General good knowledge of human rights issues
  •  Familiarity with computer word processing, databases, internet.
  •  Willingness to undertake administrative work such as photocopying, filing and archiving.
  • Commitment to working in a multi-cultural and diverse environment
  • Commitment and availability to work for at least three months
Desirable Skills and experience
  •  Interest in and knowledge of human rights, and relevant issues in the region – especially either discrimination and accountability for conflict-related human rights violations.
  •  This volunteer position would particularly suit students studying human rights / politics / law / journalism.
