General Functions
Under the overall supervision of the Regional Migration Health Advisor in RO Brussels, and the direct supervision of the Migration Health Officer - European region, IOM Sofia, the incumbent will assist with, and be responsible for a variety of tasks encompassing the field of migration and ethnic minorities’ health, and provide direct support for the implementation of Equi-Health project activities in the EU.
The Equi-Health project aims at improving the access and quality of health care services, health promotion and prevention to meet the needs of migrants, the Roma and other vulnerable ethnic minority groups, including irregular migrants. The action is prioritized by the EU within the second EC Public Health Programme and a direct grant awarded to IOM, MHD in recognition of expertise in the field and prior collaboration.
He/she more specifically will:
1. Support the Project related and administrative work, as required;
2. Carry out research and undertake analysis on the current state of affairs and future prospects and trends of migration and ethnic minority health with special focus on Roma health;
3. Maintain and promote contacts with external stakeholders and other IOM field offices in relation to Equi-health implementation;
4. Assist in the preparation of, participation in, and follow up of meetings and seminars with national/EU counterparts and other external (non-IOM) parties in migration and minorities’ health matters;
5. Assist in drafting reports, presentations, correspondence and information documents, for internal and external distribution to European institutions, national and international organisations, non-governmental organisations, public and private entities and other IOM Missions;
6. Undertake duty travels and participate in meetings as required;
7. Any other tasks as may be required.
Internship training components / learning elements:
1. Become familiar on main issues in the field of migration and ethnic minorities’ health;
2. Acquire knowledge of the scope and objectives pursued by the IOM MHD (Migration Health Division) and have the opportunity to contribute to their achievements and strategy development in engaging external stakeholders and policymakers in the field of migration and ethnic minority health;
3. Obtain experience in project implementation in a multi-partner, intercontinental settings;
4. Become acquainted with the policies of IOM as an international organization and its functioning, especially in the field of migration and ethnic minority health.
Desirable qualifications (education, experience, and personal qualities):
Education and Experience:
a) Completion of Bachelor degree. Master degree in social sciences, public or international health would be a distinct advantage; b) Experience in research and in the field of ethnic minorities’ health would be an asset.
Competencies:
c) Knowledge of European institutions and policy in the field of public health and/or migration/ethnic minorities is an asset; d) Experience with international organizations, governmental and diplomatic authorities is an asset; c) Ability to manage logistic and administrative aspects of projects; e) Clear and concise drafting skills; f) Excellent communication and negotiation skills; g) Personal commitment, efficiency and drive for results; h) Flexibility, respect for diversity and creative thinking; i) Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team and with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
Languages:
j) Fluency in spoken and written English required. Knowledge of any other European language(s) is an advantage.
