Description

The EUROLAB at the GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne (formerly Central Archive for Empirical Social Research at the University of Cologne – ZA) is a European Data Laboratory for Comparative Social Research established in 1996 by Dr. h.c. Ekkehard Mochmann as access facility to the data in the archive holdings from all fields of empirical social research.
EUROLAB is a research infrastructure for comparative social research, which offers on-site services to the scientific community. EUROLAB supports research projects with a comparative focus based on quantitative research methodology, facilitates research collaboration in comparative social research, fosters research networks and organizes
symposia on relevant topics of social science research.
From January 1st in 2011 the EUROLAB offers support for individual researchers and research groups who want to work at the EUROLAB in Cologne, e.g. during sabbaticals or research fellowships, or within specific research projects.
Successful candidates will have: 

• access to the more than 5.000 data sets and data collections at GESIS
• technical and research support
• individual working place with PC including a comprehensive program library for statistical analyses with most recent software releases
• access to related publications based on these data bases via information systems in the GESIS Library with about 20.000 volumes and more than 140 continuously held national and international social science journals

Furthermore, visitors can access facilities at the University of Cologne such as libraries, the university restaurant (Mensa) and shopping facilities.

Grant

Individual researchers may apply for support to access the EUROLAB for max. one month between April and June 2013. GESIS covers travel costs (economy class, up to 500 Euro) and accommodation. The current call for applications closes on December 15th, 2012.
What is provided?

• On-site access to resources in comparative social research (survey data, including data with restricted access, library specialized on research methodology, statistical software)
• Methodological and substantive advice on research topic
• Practical and logistic support, partly financial support

How to apply

If you want to work at the EUROLAB, please complete the application form and send it by e-mail to eurolab@gesis.org. An international selection panel will evaluate the applications on a competitive basis. The applications will be assessed depending on the on scientific merit. Applicants will be informed about the evaluation outcome within one month after the deadline.  Please note that you have to apply by December 15th, 2012.  A report on main achievements during the visit is expected to be delivered by the researcher upon departure.

The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists

The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists (hereinafter called the Programme) promote the mobility of young artists in order to enrich their personal perspectives, to develop their creative project, enabling them to engage in a cultural diversity dialogue.

The Programme offers residencies to young artists (between 25 and 35 years old) worldwide. UNESCO-Aschberg advocates and promotes creativity, highlights cultural exchanges and the need for artists to enrich their experience through contact with other cultures.

These residencies are catalysts for the development of artistic expression in all cultures of the world.

The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries Programme was integrated in UNESCO's strategy in 1994 to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. It aims to provide experience to young artists and to help them complete their training in countries other than their own.

• The artistic disciplines for which the bursaries are awarded are Creative Writing, Music and Visual Arts. These three fields cover artistic specialisations that drive the creative industries, in particular the recording industries, the organisation of concerts, the audiovisual sector, graphic design and publishing. The countries of the South, which have a rich artistic tradition, can further expand their skills in these fields, and therefore boosting the different sectors of the cultural industry.
• The Programme strategy is based in UNESCO’s policies to promote creativity and cultural diversity, and so, converges with the goals of the Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005 Convention)
• The Programme also gives priority to artists and institutions in developing countries, in order to enhance North-South and South-South cooperation.

The Inception of the Programme

• The sale of a château donated to UNESCO by Swedish philanthropists, Mr and Mrs Aschberg, allowed for the creation of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary Programme in 1994. At the time, the Programme covered five disciplines.
• Between 1994 and 2007, the Programme awarded 650 bursaries in 149 institutions to laureates from 72 countries.
• In 2007, the Programme was temporarily suspended and was subject to an evaluation aimed at not only to draw synergies with the 2005 Convention but also to optimise its management.

2013 IRA’s Elva Knight Research Grant program

The International Reading Association’s Elva Knight Research Grant program provides small grants, up to a maximum of US$8,000, for promising research that addresses significant questions for the discipline of reading/literacy research and practice.  It is the intent that such grants will provide researchers with the opportunity to develop important perspectives on the reading/literacy field.
Grant studies may be carried out using any research method or approach so long as the focus of the project is on research in reading/writing or literacy or teacher preparation for reading/writing instruction.  Activities such as developing new programs or instructional materials are not eligible for funding except to the extent that these activities are necessary for the conduct of the research.

Location: Any accredited college or university in the United States.
Duration: 1 year
Cover: Elva Knight Research Grant program provides small grants, up to a maximum of US$8,000

Eligibility: All applicants including any co-applicants must be current members of the International Reading Association (IRA).  Applicants may apply for more than one IRA research grants. However, applicants are limited to one research award per year.  There must be a span of five years between funding of a project and submission of another proposal for the Elva Knight Grant.

The Jobs Knowledge Platform is managed by the World Bank in collaboration with partner organizations specialised in economic research and international development.
Addressing this key global policy priority, the Jobs Knowledge Platform aims to share insights and build synergies across different approaches, sectors, and disciplines and create a community to exchange challenges and solutions. Another objective of the JPK is to inform important policy debates.

Awards

JKP is presently seeking applications from NGOs, international organizations, think tanks, academia, civil society, and other key stakeholders in the jobs agenda for the following awards:
1. Most Promising Approach Award
2. Most Recommended Award (based on the number and ranking of online user reviews)
3. Best in Addressing Political Economy and Implementation Challenges Award
Each category will have one winner, to receive an award of $5,000 USD from the JKP, through its partner The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA).

Master Grants at UNIL,Switzerland

Description

To facilitate access to Master’s degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne makes available around ten Master’s grants which are awarded on a competitive basis.
Candidates must choose a Master’s programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine, Master of Arts in Public Management and Policy, Master of Arts in Sciences and Practices of Education. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master’s degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Eligibility

The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor’s degree.
The  following  are  admitted for  enrolment  with  a  view  to  obtaining  a Master’s  degree:

• Holders  of  a  Bachelor’s  degree  awarded by a Swiss university or  another  university qualification deemed equivalent by the Rectorate, in a field the same as or similar to that of the chosen Master’s.
• Holders  of  a Bachelor’s degree  awarded  by  a  Swiss  university  or  another  university qualification deemed equivalent by the Rectorate in a similar field are admitted provided any shortcomings in basic theory are made good during the degree course leading to the Master’s.
• Those  in  possession  of  a  Bachelor’s  degree  awarded by a Swiss University of Applied Science (HES) or by a Swiss University of Teacher Education (HEP) are admitted provided any shortcomings in basic theory are made good during the degree course leading to the Master’s. If the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are in different fields, candidates for the Master’s are  admitted provided any shortcomings in basic theory are made good  before  joining the degree course leading to the Master’s.

The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master’s. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master’s degree.

Scholarship

The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.
