pplications are now being accepted for the spring 2018 term of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector, United Nations University. The spring 2018 term commences on 5 February and lasts until 1 June 2018. The deadline for applications is 29 October 2017.

The underlying principles of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector are centred on creating a dynamic, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals. Junior Junior Fellows Internship at the United Nations University: 9:30–17:30, Monday to Friday. Junior Fellows are provided office space and facilities as appropriate for their work and enjoy free access to UNU Headquarters facilities, including the library and gym.

The programme places a strong emphasis on the training, guidance, and hands-on experience that form the foundation of a successful and beneficial internship. Under guidance of the programme supervisor and through working closely with UN professional staff, Junior Fellows will learn about and provide support to the following ongoing assignments, projects and initiatives within the Office of the Rector:

research and writing for institutional development: preparation of executive briefs on priority issues; background research and drafting of topical information briefs in support of internal policy development (i.e. related to the functioning of the University);

planning: supporting the development of project management tools and systems;

event coordination: supporting the organization of lectures, conferences, workshops, and other public events;

meeting coordination: logistical support and minute taking;

editorial support: proof-reading reports and copy editing;

communication: preparation and dissemination of newsletters, event summaries, and other communication documents.

 Eligibilities

The qualifications which will be considered in the application process include, but are not limited to, the following. The ideal candidate:

is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a field related to the University’s work;

is under 32 years of age at the time of application;

must not have more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;

has a native or near fluent command of written and spoken English;

has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;

can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;

demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;

has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.); and

has a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.

Description

“Towards A Greater Understanding of Japan and a Lasting World Peace,” MIF has started the Research Fellowship Program in 1980.

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is a nongovernmental organization. Its Fund is solely based on donations from many Japanese people who have responded with goodwill to Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae’s call. While many donations have been kindly offered by enterprises and groups, most of the donors are individuals who are sympathetic with the Founder’s ideals, and maintain contributions to the Fund from their limited incomes.

Successful applicants are urged to seriously consider and understand the goodwill of those persons, and ensure that the provided fellowships are utilized effectively.

Eligibility

Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic qualifications;

Applicants must be 49 years old or under;

Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan;

Applicants should not have been in Japan in the past and/or in the present;

Applicants should have firm positions and professions in their home countries, and should return to their countries on completion of their fellowship stay by MIF;

Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way which would not prevent from carrying out research in Japan.

Fields of study such as natural science, engineering and medicine are given first priority.

Benefits

There are 20 fellowships each year for a period of from three to six months;

Stipend includes research and stay, insurance, air transportation (a round-trip air ticket to/from Tokyo) and a lump sum on arrival;

Applicants indicate the period of Fellowship with the length of stay needed for the Research Project (Application Document #2) between 3 months to 6 months;

The commencing month and ending month between April 2018 to March 2019;

Applicants are free to select host institutions (university research laboratories, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities of private industry) in which to carry out their research;

However, applicants are cautioned that they are obliged to obtain acceptance from such host institutions prior to submitting their applications. MIF cannot give counsel or advice to an applicant concerning his/her host institution in Japan.

TAKASE Foundation International Student Scholarships at Saitama University in Japan, 2017-2018

Applications are invited for TAKASE Foundation International Student Scholarship Program for fall 2017 / spring 2018 at Saitama University in Japan. International students are eligible to apply for this scholarship program.

The aim of the scholarship is to privately finance international students to study in Japan.

Saitama is known for its well-developed industries and cultures, well -balanced urban and natural environment and convenience. The Asian Development Bank/Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) offers about 150 postgraduate scholarships a year for studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions.

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies (JISP), 2018

Applications are invited for Japan-IMF Scholarships Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) from Japanese nationals obtaining PhD degrees in macroeconomics at a university outside of Japan. Selected scholars must attend a 2-day orientation program at the IMF in Washington D.C., shortly before they begin studies at their respective university.

JISP’s goal is supporting Japanese scholars during their doctoral studies in macroeconomics and helping them become applied macroeconomists at the IMF.

The Japan-IMF Scholarships Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) is financed by the government of Japan and administered by the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development with assistance from the Institute of International Education (IIE) and International Education Blueprint (IEB) in Japan.

The candidate should have a very good command of the English language.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue PhD program at a university outside of Japan.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the field of macroeconomics.

Scholarship Award: The JISP covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study including:

Full university tuition and fees;

2018 Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarships for Foreign Undergraduate Students, Japan

If the recipient has been receiving the scholarship despite his/her falling under any of the following situations, the recipient will be ordered to return the amount of scholarship that he/she received during the period wherein he/she was involved with any of the following situations: The recipient is determined to have made a false statement on his/her application; The recipient violates any article of his/her pledge to MEXT; The recipient violates any Japanese laws and is sentenced to imprisonment with or without work for life or for a period of exceeding 1 year;  The recipient is subject to disciplinary action by the university, including expulsion(The scholarship payment may be stopped during the period up until punishment is decided by the university, etc.);  It has been determined that it will be impossible for the recipient to complete the course within the standard course period because of poor academic grades or suspension or leave of absence;  The recipient’s residence status has changed to one other than “College Student”? The recipient has received a scholarship from another institution (excluding those specified for research expenditures);  The recipient has proceeded to a higher level of education without receiving approval for an extension of the period of the scholarship.

Tuition and Other Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT.

Travelling CostsTransportation to Japan: In principle, MEXT stipulates the travel schedule and route, and provides an economy-class airline ticket for the flight from the international airport closest to the recipient’s residence (in principle, the country of nationality) to Narita International Airport or to any other international airport on the normal route to the accepting university. The grantee shall bear at his/her own expense all costs related to domestic travel from the grantee’s residence to the nearest international airport, airport taxes, airport usage fees, special taxes necessary for travel, travel expenses within Japan (including airline transit costs), travel insurance expenses, etc. The grantee shall also bear at his/her own expense travel and lodging costs incurred in a third country if the grantee must travel to a third country before coming to Japan for visa purposes because there are no Japanese diplomatic missions in his/her country. In principle, MEXT will not provide the airline ticket in cases when the grantee arrives in Japan from a country other than the country of nationality because the grantee had moved to the country before the arrival in Japan. Transportation from Japan: Grantees shall graduate the accepting university and return to the home country by the end of the final month of the period of scholarship (Section 4 above) designated by MEXT. Based on the Application by the grantee, MEXT, in principle, shall provide an economy-class airline ticket from Narita International Airport or the international airport used for the normal route to and from the accepting university to the international airport (in principle, in the country of nationality) nearest to the returning recipient’s residence. The grantee shall bear at his/her own expense all costs related to travel from the grantee’s residence to the nearest international airport, airport taxes, airport usage fees, special taxes necessary for travel, travel expenses within the country of nationality (including airline transit costs), travel insurance expenses, etc.

Note 1: Should the grantee return to the home country before the end of the period of scholarship due to personal circumstances, or reasons 8. (1) ?~? above, MEXT will not pay for the return travel expenses

Note 2: If a grantee continues to stay in Japan after the scholarship period has ended, he/she will not be paid travel expenses to return to the home country for a temporary return.

Scholarship can be taken in Japan

Eligibility: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is now accepting applications from overseas students for study in Japan. The aim is to foster human resources who will become bridges of friendship between their country and Japan through study in Japan and who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.

Nationality: Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. However, persons with dual nationality who hold Japanese nationality and whose place of residence at the time of application is outside of Japan are eligible to apply as long as they choose the nationality of the foreign country and give up their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan. Applicant screening will be conducted at the Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s country.

Academic Background: Applicants must either have completed 12 years of regular school education or have graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above qualifications by March 2018 are eligible. Includes those wishing to enroll for direct placement in the fall term who are expected to graduate by the end of August 2017.) Applicants who satisfy the entrance requirements for a Japanese university are also eligible. (4) Japanese Language: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese. Applicants must be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan. In addition, in principle, applicants must be willing to carry out their academic studies in Japan in Japanese.

 Health: Applicants must be free from any mental or physical disabilities that would impede the pursuit of study at Japanese universities.

 Arrival in Japan: In principle, applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between the 1st and ?th of April 2017. If an applicant is to enroll in his/her university from the fall semester through direct placement, he or she must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan by the date specified by the accepting university.

Visa Requirement: Applicants must acquire College Student (ryugaku) visas before entering Japan. They then enter Japan with the College Student (ryugaku) residence status. Please also note that those who change their visa status to one other than College Student after arrival in Japan will lose their qualification to be Japanese Government Scholarship recipients from the date when their visa status changes.

Others: While the applicant is studying in Japan, he/she shall contribute to mutual understanding between Japan and the home country by participating in activities at schools and communities with the aim of contributing to the internationalization of Japan. The applicant shall make efforts to promote relations between the home country and Japan by maintaining close relations with the university attended after graduation, cooperating with the conducting of surveys and questionnaires after the return home, and cooperating with all relevant projects and events conducted by Japanese diplomatic missions in the applicant’s home country.

International Scholarships for Contemporary Japan Program (CJP) at KGU in Japan, 2017-2018

Kwansei Gakuin University is offering International Scholarships for Contemporary Japan Program (CJP). In order to attend Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) as an exchange student, students must be enrolled at their of KGU’s partner universities

The Contemporary Japan Program is specially designed for incoming exchange students to Kwansei Gakuin University. Exchange students are offered a choice between two study tracks that will define the main focus of their time at KGU, the “Japanese Language Track” and the “Modern Japan Track”.

Kwansei Gakuin University, colloquially abbreviated to Kangaku, is a non-denominational Christian private and coeducational university in Nishinomiya, Sanda, Osaka City, and Tokyo, Japan.

No prior knowledge of Japanese Language is necessary to study at KGU as an exchange student.

Course Level: Scholarships are awarded to study in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Study Subject: Scholarships are available for pursuing Contemporary Japan Program (CJP).

Scholarship Award:

The JASSO scholarship: The Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) offers a limited amount of scholarships for incoming exchange students requiring financial support and fulfilling the specific prerequisites for nomination to study in Japan for a semester or an academic year. This scholarship includes a monthly stipend of ¥80,000 (estimated) which will be provided after arriving in Japan. The number of scholarships available varies each year according to government funding. JASSO Scholarship recipients are forbidden from concurrently receiving other scholarships which pay the equivalent of a monthly stipend of the amount of the JASSO Scholarship or higher. Recipients receiving any such additional scholarship will lose the JASSO Scholarship. Applicants may concurrently apply for such scholarships, but will have to decline them should the JASSO Scholarship be awarded.

Other external scholarships: KGU may be able to nominate incoming exchange students for other external scholarship. In this case, KGU will

contact students who submitted a Scholarship Application Form and fulfill specific prerequisites for each different scholarship. KGU may require the student to submit extra documents such as a proof of the family’s income.

Scholarship can be taken in Japan

Eligibility: In order to attend Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) as an exchange student, students must be enrolled at one of KGU’s partner universities. Candidates who have been officially nominated by their partner institutions must fulfill the following requirements

A student who has good character and performed well academically in their home institution. The students’ grades from the previous academic year must be equal exceed 2.30 according to the scholarship GPA formula below. Academic transcripts for the previous semester will be sufficient if transcripts for the whole academic year are unavailable. Moreover, in the rare case that student’s grades cannot be calculated according to the Scholarship GPA Evaluation Chart, the student will need to and then a letter of recommendation which states that the nominee

performs well academically to the standards we require for a scholarship nomination will be substituted. This letter must be written by a member of academic or administrative staff from the home institution.

A student who has a clear purpose for studying in Japan and who will benefit from the exchange experience.

A student who needs financial assistance for studying in Japan. Students with a family income lower than 8,000,000 JPY per year will be considered preferentially.

A student who will continue their studies and/or who will receive a degree at their home university after completion of the exchange program.

A student who will have the visa status of college student when coming to Japan. Japanese Nationals are not eligible.

If a student is awarded another scholarship for his/her studies in Japan, the amount of money received from that scholarship should not exceed the amount of the scholarship received through KGU.

A student who hasn’t received a scholarship in the past to come and study in Japan as an exchange student. Or if a student has received a scholarship in the past as an exchange student at least 3 years must have passed since receiving the scholarship

Test Requirement: Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 or the equivalent level is required. Students who wish to take regular university courses at KGU during their exchange must have already passed JLPT N1, or pass the Regular Course Aptitude test (JLPT N1 equivalent level) after arriving in Japan (also held during orientation). EAJS Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships in Japan, 2017

Applications are invited for Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships to undertake research in Japan for the academic year 2017-2018. Fellowships are open to international students in any field of Japanese Studies.

The general aims of the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) are stimulating interest in and encouraging research in Japanese studies in all the countries of Europe as well as USA and Japan, promoting the flow of information and communication in this particular field of studies through its triennial international conference, but also through symposia and workshops.

A curriculum vitae and a brief statement (not more than 300 words) describing the project for which the applicant wishes to pursue their research in Japan. These two documents are to be submitted by the applicant via the online application system.

A letter of support from the student’s supervisor or advisor must be sent to the EAJS office separately by the advisor on the student’s behalf. It must be printed on university letterhead and display the advisor’s signature. The letter may be sent by post or in PDF format by email.

Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, 2017-2018

Applications are invited for Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarships Program (JJ/WBGSP) from the nationals of developing countries. Scholarships are awarded for studying only at a master program that has been granted “preferred” status by the JJ/WBG Scholarship Program.

The program has awarded over 5000 scholarships selected from over 65,000 applicants, and disbursed over US$200 million in funding from the Japanese government.

Established in 1987 with funding from the Government of Japan, the Joint Japan / World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) has helped create an international community of development professionals through the Program’s financing of graduate and post-graduate studies.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree) earned before 2013, be under 45 years old on the application deadline date, and have at least 3 years of recent development-related experience since earning a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing masters degree at Preferred University.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded for studying only at a master program that has been granted “preferred” status by the JJ/WBG Scholarship Program.

Number of Awards: JJWBGSP offers scholarships for over 200 Preferred Programs (.xlsx 49 KB) spanning a wide array of development topics and for 14 Partner Programs (.xlsx 15 KB)  at universities in U.S., Africa and Japan in key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

Scholarship Award: A JJWBGSP scholarship provides tuition, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and travel allowance. The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides the recipient with the following benefits:

Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way air travel, scholars will receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip;

Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance usually obtained through the university.

A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books. The amount of the allowance varies depending on the host country.

Please note all JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship does not cover:

VISA application(s) costs

Expenses to bring and/or support a scholar’s family members;

Extra-curricular courses or training;

Language training not provided by the graduate program;

Additional travel during the course of the study program;
