pplications are now being accepted for the spring 2018 term of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector, United Nations University. The spring 2018 term commences on 5 February and lasts until 1 June 2018. The deadline for applications is 29 October 2017.

The underlying principles of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector are centred on creating a dynamic, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals. Junior Junior Fellows Internship at the United Nations University: 9:30–17:30, Monday to Friday. Junior Fellows are provided office space and facilities as appropriate for their work and enjoy free access to UNU Headquarters facilities, including the library and gym.

The programme places a strong emphasis on the training, guidance, and hands-on experience that form the foundation of a successful and beneficial internship. Under guidance of the programme supervisor and through working closely with UN professional staff, Junior Fellows will learn about and provide support to the following ongoing assignments, projects and initiatives within the Office of the Rector:

research and writing for institutional development: preparation of executive briefs on priority issues; background research and drafting of topical information briefs in support of internal policy development (i.e. related to the functioning of the University);

planning: supporting the development of project management tools and systems;

event coordination: supporting the organization of lectures, conferences, workshops, and other public events;

meeting coordination: logistical support and minute taking;

editorial support: proof-reading reports and copy editing;

communication: preparation and dissemination of newsletters, event summaries, and other communication documents.

 Eligibilities

The qualifications which will be considered in the application process include, but are not limited to, the following. The ideal candidate:

is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a field related to the University’s work;

is under 32 years of age at the time of application;

must not have more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;

has a native or near fluent command of written and spoken English;

has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;

can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;

demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;

has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.); and

has a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship 2018

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides master’s and doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the United States to participate in educational, cultural, residential community building, and leadership development programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM). Undertaking degree studies at UHM through an East-West Center fellowship is not merely about receiving a financial aid scholarship. Since the basic purpose of the East-West Center is to build a sense of Asia-Pacific community and prepare for future leadership roles, EWC graduate student fellows live together and interact with each other in both intellectual and social activities. They are, from the very outset, an identifiable group committed to the notion of building an Asia-Pacific community. The graduate degree fellowship covers the cost of tuition and fees, books, housing in an East-West Center dormitory, and partial funding toward meals, health insurance, and incidental expenses. “Towards A Greater Understanding of Japan and a Lasting World Peace,” MIF has started the Research Fellowship Program in 1980.

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is a nongovernmental organization. Its Fund is solely based on donations from many Japanese people who have responded with goodwill to Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae’s call. While many donations have been kindly offered by enterprises and groups, most of the donors are individuals who are sympathetic with the Founder’s ideals, and maintain contributions to the Fund from their limited incomes.

Successful applicants are urged to seriously consider and understand the goodwill of those persons, and ensure that the provided fellowships are utilized effectively.

Eligibility

Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic qualifications;

Applicants must be 49 years old or under;

Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan;

There are 20 fellowships each year for a period of from three to six months;

Stipend includes research and stay, insurance, air transportation (a round-trip air ticket to/from Tokyo) and a lump sum on arrival;

Applicants indicate the period of Fellowship with the length of stay needed for the Research Project (Application Document #2) between 3 months to 6 months;

The commencing month and ending month between April 2018 to March 2019;

Applicants are free to select host institutions (university research laboratories, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities of private industry) in which to carry out their research;

However, applicants are cautioned that they are obliged to obtain acceptance from such host institutions prior to submitting their applications. MIF cannot give counsel or advice to an applicant concerning his/her host institution in Japan.

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies (JISP), 2018

Applications are invited for Japan-IMF Scholarships Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) from Japanese nationals obtaining PhD degrees in macroeconomics at a university outside of Japan. Selected scholars must attend a 2-day orientation program at the IMF in Washington D.C., shortly before they begin studies at their respective university.

JISP’s goal is supporting Japanese scholars during their doctoral studies in macroeconomics and helping them become applied macroeconomists at the IMF.

The Japan-IMF Scholarships Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) is financed by the government of Japan and administered by the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development with assistance from the Institute of International Education (IIE) and International Education Blueprint (IEB) in Japan.

The candidate should have a very good command of the English language.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue PhD program at a university outside of Japan.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the field of macroeconomics.

Scholarship Award: The JISP covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study including:

Applications are open for Japanese Government Scholarships available for international students. Scholarships are available to pursue undergraduate studies in Social Sciences and Humanities and Natural Sciences at Japanese universities.

Japanese Government Scholarship aim is to foster human resources who will become bridges of friendship between your country and Japan through study in Japan and who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: MEXT offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2018 as follows.

Note: A student who intends to major in Natural Sciences and would like to choose more than one major is required to choose and select first-, second-, and third-choice subjects from the subjects in parentheses from within the same course (i.e. Natural Sciences A, B or C). However, a student who selects Course C as his/her first choice may choose his/her second-choice subjects from Course B or C and thirdchoice subject from Course B as Course C offers only two subjects.

Scholarship Award: Scholarship includes:

Allowance: 117,000 yen per month. The scholarship is cancelled in principle if the recipient is absent from the university or preparatory Japanese-teaching institution for an extended period. In case that the recipient research in a designated region, 2,000 or 3,000 yen per month will be added. The monetary amount each year may be subject to change due to budgetary reasons. The scholarship will be also cancelled in principle in the following situations. If the recipient has been receiving the scholarship despite his/her falling under any of the following situations, the recipient will be ordered to return the amount of scholarship that he/she received during the period wherein he/she was involved with any of the following situations: The recipient is determined to have made a false statement on his/her application; The recipient violates any article of his/her pledge to MEXT; The recipient violates any Japanese laws and is sentenced to imprisonment with or without work for life or for a period of exceeding 1 year;  The recipient is subject to disciplinary action by the university, including expulsion(The scholarship payment may be stopped during the period up until punishment is decided by the university, etc.);  It has been determined that it will be impossible for the recipient to complete the course within the standard course period because of poor academic grades or suspension or leave of absence;  The recipient’s residence status has changed to one other than “College Student”? The recipient has received a scholarship from another institution (excluding those specified for research expenditures);  The recipient has proceeded to a higher level of education without receiving approval for an extension of the period of the scholarship.

Tuition and Other Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT.

Travelling CostsTransportation to Japan: In principle, MEXT stipulates the travel schedule and route, and provides an economy-class airline ticket for the flight from the international airport closest to the recipient’s residence (in principle, the country of nationality) to Narita International Airport or to any other international airport on the normal route to the accepting university. The grantee shall bear at his/her own expense all costs related to domestic travel from the grantee’s residence to the nearest international airport, airport taxes, airport usage fees, special taxes necessary for travel, travel expenses within Japan (including airline transit costs), travel insurance expenses, etc. The grantee shall also bear at his/her own expense travel and lodging costs incurred in a third country if the grantee must travel to a third country before coming to Japan for visa purposes because there are no Japanese diplomatic missions in his/her country. In principle, MEXT will not provide the airline ticket in cases when the grantee arrives in Japan from a country other than the country of nationality because the grantee had moved to the country before the arrival in Japan. Transportation from Japan: Grantees shall graduate the accepting university and return to the home country by the end of the final month of the period of scholarship (Section 4 above) designated by MEXT. Based on the Application by the grantee, MEXT, in principle, shall provide an economy-class airline ticket from Narita International Airport or the international airport used for the normal route to and from the accepting university to the international airport (in principle, in the country of nationality) nearest to the returning recipient’s residence. The grantee shall bear at his/her own expense all costs related to travel from the grantee’s residence to the nearest international airport, airport taxes, airport usage fees, special taxes necessary for travel, travel expenses within the country of nationality (including airline transit costs), travel insurance expenses, etc.

Note 1: Should the grantee return to the home country before the end of the period of scholarship due to personal circumstances, or reasons 8. (1) ?~? above, MEXT will not pay for the return travel expenses

Note 2: If a grantee continues to stay in Japan after the scholarship period has ended, he/she will not be paid travel expenses to return to the home country for a temporary return.

Nationality: Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. However, persons with dual nationality who hold Japanese nationality and whose place of residence at the time of application is outside of Japan are eligible to apply as long as they choose the nationality of the foreign country and give up their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan. Applicant screening will be conducted at the Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s country.

Academic Background: Applicants must either have completed 12 years of regular school education or have graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above qualifications by March 2018 are eligible. Includes those wishing to enroll for direct placement in the fall term who are expected to graduate by the end of August 2017.) Applicants who satisfy the entrance requirements for a Japanese university are also eligible. (4) Japanese Language: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese. Applicants must be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan. In addition, in principle, applicants must be willing to carry out their academic studies in Japan in Japanese.

 Health: Applicants must be free from any mental or physical disabilities that would impede the pursuit of study at Japanese universities.

 Arrival in Japan: In principle, applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between the 1st and ?th of April 2017. If an applicant is to enroll in his/her university from the fall semester through direct placement, he or she must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan by the date specified by the accepting university.

Visa Requirement: Applicants must acquire College Student (ryugaku) visas before entering Japan. They then enter Japan with the College Student (ryugaku) residence status. Please also note that those who change their visa status to one other than College Student after arrival in Japan will lose their qualification to be Japanese Government Scholarship recipients from the date when their visa status changes.

Others: While the applicant is studying in Japan, he/she shall contribute to mutual understanding between Japan and the home country by participating in activities at schools and communities with the aim of contributing to the internationalization of Japan. The applicant shall make efforts to promote relations between the home country and Japan by maintaining close relations with the university attended after graduation, cooperating with the conducting of surveys and questionnaires after the return home, and cooperating with all relevant projects and events conducted by Japanese diplomatic missions in the applicant’s home country.
