Latvian Government Study Scholarships for International Students in Latvia

Latvian Government is now accepting applications for ‘Study Scholarships’ to pursue undergraduate, master and PhD degree. These scholarships are available to international students for the academic year 2017-2018.

Scholarships are offered to foreign students, researchers and teaching staff who have successfully completed at least one academic year of studies for studies, research and participation in summer schools.

Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

Scholarship Value:

The amount of the Latvian state scholarship for studies is:

for bachelor`s and master`s students – 500 EUR per month;

for PhD students – 670 EUR per month.

All study programmes in English at Latvian higher education institutions are not free of charge. The Latvian scholarship holder can use the scholarship for covering of the tuition fee or for accommodation and meals. Please take into account that the amount of the scholarship is not high enough to cover all expenses in Latvia.

In limited numbers the host higher education institution provides the scholarship holder with a place in a students’ dormitory or a guesthouse. Requests for accommodation at the international student dormitories need be submitted one month before arriving at a respective higher education institution.

In any month in which the foreign student is present in the territory of Latvia for less than 15 calendar days no scholarship is provided.

The Latvian scholarship cannot be awarded concurrently with other scholarships.

Travel expenses from a home country to and from Latvia are not covered by the Latvian scholarship.

Scholarship holders are required to make their own arrangements for insurance coverage.

Scholarships for applicants from one country may not exceed 10% from the total grant amount for study scholarships.

Scholarship for master`s studies in the study programmes of Latvian philology, Latvian literature, Latvian culture and Latvian history can be granted for two academic years, i.e. for the duration of master`s study programme.

Internship Activities

The intern, under the guidance of the Secretary-General, shall perform the following duties:

Conducts background research on specific topics;

Assists in writing speaking notes for the Secretary-General;

Assists with minute taking, and writing mission reports;

Drafts, sends and archives some of the Secretary-General´s correspondence, including in Dutch language;

Acts as a focal point for media contacts in English and Dutch, including organizing, responding to requests via email and phone calls;

Contributes to the follow-up on contacts established by the Secretary-General;

Actively integrates the inclusion of a gender perspective in all activities.

Expected outcome/learning opportunities

The intern is expected to benefit from the position by gaining insights, experience and knowledge on:

Working processes of an intergovernmental organization;

Political sensitivities of working in the Secretary-General’s office.

The intern will also have the opportunity to develop his/her analytical and researching skills. The objective of the internship is to provide a learning opportunity for an interested and talented student within a relevant study area. The intern is expected to act as part of the team, learning from all team members in their different capacities.

Management and Organization

The intern will be supervised by the Secretary-General and/or any other person designated by him/her. The intern will be provided with a work-station at IDEA.

Timing and Work plan

The internship position will be full-time for three - six months. The intern will work office hours 9-17 if not otherwise agreed with the Supervisor.

Qualifications and required skills

100 Early Career Fellowships for Citizens of UK, 2017

The Leverhulme Trust Board, through its Research Awards Advisory Committee, is offering approximately 100 fellowships in 2017. Fellowships can be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK.

Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, but who have a proven record of research.

The Leverhulme Trust was established by the Will of William Hesketh Lever, the founder of Lever Brothers.

Course Level: Fellowships are available for early career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work.

Study Subject: Applications will be considered in all subject areas with the following exceptions: both because of the substantial funding available from other sources for applied medical research, and the Trust’s priority to support investigations of a fundamental nature, we do not fund studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals, or research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications.

Scholarship Award: The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £24,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Given the prestige of the awards each Fellow may request annual research expenses of up to £6,000 to further his or her research activities.

Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility:

Applicants must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK university or comparable UK institution, nor may Fellows hold such a post concurrently with the Early Career Fellowship. Those in receipt of a stipendiary Fellowship may not hold this at the same time as an Early Career Fellowship. Applicants who have existing funding in place for a duration equivalent to or greater than the duration of the Early Career Fellowship should not apply.

All candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the Fellowship. Those who are or have been registered for a doctorate at any time may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis by the closing date of 4pm on 2 March 2017. Those who at the time of commencing the Fellowship are registered for or are intending to register for degrees, professional or vocational qualifications are not eligible.

Applications are invited from those with a doctorate who submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination not more than four years prior to the application closing date. Hence those who formally submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination before 2 March 2013 are not eligible unless they have since had a career break. Those wishing to make a case for a career break should present the case for interruption by a period of maternity leave, family commitments, illness, or other exceptional circumstances.

Applicants must either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the Fellowship or at the time of the application deadline must hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed-term lectureship, fellowship). The intention is to support the career development of those building an academic career within the UK.

Candidates who have been, or are currently a Principal Investigator on a 3-year post-doctoral research project, or have held or currently hold a comparable 3-year post-doctoral position to pursue their own research are not eligible to apply.

The Research Awards Advisory Committee believes that the development of an academic career is best served by gaining experience at different institutions. Applicants who have not already moved institutions in the course of their academic career (i.e. between their undergraduate degree and current position) should nominate a new host institution, or otherwise demonstrate clear evidence of the academic and/or personal reasons for remaining at the same institution, such as access to highly specialist equipment or a highly specialised research team.

The matching funding contributed by the host institution must be drawn from generally available funds and must not be associated with any other grants received by the institution. The host department must secure the matching funding for the applicant before the closing date. Applications that do not meet these conditions are ineligible and will be rejected.

A candidate may submit only one application per year. Previously unsuccessful applicants may reapply. Candidates may not apply for both an Early Career Fellowship and a Study Abroad Studentship in the same year.

Nationality: Citizens of UK are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

Eligibility

Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application;

Must have obtained or be on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree with a Baccalaureate from an accredited college/university, or its equivalent;

Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent;

Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting August/September 2017, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Master’s Degree;
