Scholarship benefits:

• Full-time study - £5,000 per year for up to 4 years (excluding industrial placements)
• Sandwich - The award will be paid on a pro rata basis
• Part-time study - The award will be paid on a reduced basis normally £2,500 per year
• MSc (1 year full-time) £5,000
• MSc (2 year part-time) normally £2,500 per year

Eligibility
FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY:

1. Applicants must be a British, Commonwealth or European Union Citizen.
2. Applicants must be normally resident in the United Kingdom and have lived here for the last 3 years.
3. Applicants must have pursued a vocational route in an engineering discipline for at least 2 years after having left full-time education and before entering a degree-level engineering course.

FOR MSc STUDY:

1. Applicants must be a recent graduate who has completed at least a 2 year engineering apprenticeship before entering an engineering degree-level course.
2. Applicants must be a British, Commonwealth or European Union Citizen.

Training in Germany for Networking projects of Youth in Action

TICTAC in Germany – Multilateral Training Course to support quality in Training & Networking projects of Youth in Action aim is to develop participants’ competences for implementing Action 4.3 / 3.1 projects, as support measures in an organization’s long term strategy.
The specific objectives of the course are:
* to promote the YiA Programme as an Educational Tool;
* to explore the YiA Programme with a special focus on the aims of Action 4.3 / 3.1 and its activities;
* to understand the role of Action 4.3/ 3.1 projects within a long term strategy;
* to simulate the first steps of organising an Action 4.3 / 3.1 project within an international team;
* to develop participant’s competences in planning Non Formal Education and Intercultural Learning Processes;
* to promote Youth Participation and European Citizenship as key elements when designing a YiA Project.
In the training course participants have the opportunity to meet and to get to know others’ organisations, but contact making is not directly a priority of the training course.

TARGET GROUP

The training course is designed for youth workers and youth leaders, who have experienced an international event/activity before (not necessarily a project under the Youth in Action programme), have at least basic knowledge in the Youth in Action programme, are newcomers in Training and Networking projects (Action 4.3/3.1) of Youth in Action or have limited experience and are motivated to learn about and make use of these Actions as a tool for creating or strengthening international partnerships and working on quality in their international Youth in Action projects, have the support of an organisation to attend the TICTAC course and are in the position to implement Action 4.3/3.1 training and networking projects in their organisation,
* are minimum 18 years old,
* are able to use English as a working language in order to establish effective communication during group-work and sessions. A low level of English will limit your learning opportunities.

The European Union offers fully-funded Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Masters programmes and Doctorate programmes to students coming from developing countries.

These scholarships are exclusively awarded to students that have been selected to attend one of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes at Masters or Doctorate level.

Host Institution(s):

European Universities/Institutions participating under approved Erasmus Mundus Action Joint Programmes.

Field(s) of Study:

For 2013-2014, about 139 Masters courses and 43 Joint Doctorate courses are supported by scholarships. The field(s) of study covered are: Agriculture and Veterinary, Engineering, Manufacture and Construction, Health and Welfare, Humanities and Arts, Science, Mathematics and Computing, and Social Sciences, Business and Law.

Number of Awards:

From the period of 2009-2013,  about 5,300 Masters students and 440 Doctoral students from developing countries will be awarded with an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

Target group:

Students from developing/emerging countries who do not come from the 27 Member States of the EU and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The programme offers full-time scholarships and/or fellowships that cover the living costs, tuition fees, travelling and insurance costs of the students.

Scholarship amounts can vary according to the level of studies/teaching/research, their duration (3 months to 3 years) and the grantee’s nationality (scholarships for non-EU individuals are higher than for EU individuals).

First pan-regional e-academy for youth to open next year

A Facebook-based group of Israeli and Arab youth called YaLa Young Leaders is planning in 2013 to launch the first virtual pan-regional academic institution for Middle Eastern and North African youth, to be called YaLa Young Leaders Online Academy, or YLOA.

YaLa Young Leaders is an online, Facebook-based movement launched in May 2011 and dedicated to empowering young people in the Middle East to lead their generation to a better future.

With about 183,000 members from across the Arab world, Israel, the Mediterranean and the wider international community, YaLa Young Leaders is a broad-based and fast-growing Middle Eastern peace movement.

The plan to open the online joint Israeli-Arab academy was announced at an August YaLa peace and economic cooperation summit held in Berlin and attended by 18 of the most active of YaLa's Facebook members from Israel, Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq and Kuwait, according to a report on The Daily Dot.

“From the Yasmin and Tahrir revolutions, the struggles in Syria, Libya and Yemen, the struggle for social justice in Israel, the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] youth has shown its ability to mobilise for greater freedom and equality. YaLa is the place where these revolutions meet,” states the YaLa Young Leaders Facebook page.

The YaLa Young Leaders group calls for action to advance a peaceful and democratic Middle East and North Africa. Former Israeli diplomat and politician and founder of the YaLa Young Leaders movement, Uri Savir, is quoted as saying the YLOA “can revolutionise relations between young people of the Middle East”.

The planned academy is in line with the YaLa Young Leaders view that education is the number one priority for investment in the region – and hence the necessity to make high quality and market-relevant higher education accessible to the region’s youth.

Through convergence with the online education revolution, the YLOA will serve as an academic platform that is open and accessible to all YaLa members for free enrolment, according to the concluding statement from the group’s Berlin peace summit.

YLOA will provide education and training in the areas of business, technology and social media; negotiation, mediation and good governance; and regional culture and peace studies.

To ensure quality and credibility, YaLa will partner with top regional and international universities and top companies such as Facebook, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard, on the development and delivery of online courses that are enriching and relevant to the social, political and economic necessities of the region.

YLOA will emphasise the Mediterranean Basin as an area of great potential for social and economic cooperation projects, and will be closely linked to other YaLa projects, including online technological accelerators and online language training in English, Arabic and Hebrew.

Mayadah Shehadeh, associate dean for student affairs in the faculty of pharmacy at the University of Jordan, Amman, cautiously welcomed the e-academy initiative, saying to University World News: “The idea is appealing, as higher education in the whole region needs dramatic upgrading to meet the modern issues and procedures.”

John Daly, a science and technology consultant and former director of the office of research at USAID, was enthusiastic about the YLOA initiative.

"This is a wonderful idea, especially so since it comes from young people themselves, and from young people already using the internet for networking and learning about each other," Daly told University World News.

"There is a huge need in the region to provide opportunities to learn useful things. Obviously promoting peace in the region through mutual understanding is also critically important.

"Within the proposed fields of interest in YLOA teaching programmes, perhaps training in business entrepreneurship, good governance and ‘culture of peace’ might be especially useful."

Daly continued: "The most important thing is to assure that the courses meet real needs, are effective in reaching out to the students, and use the best online techniques.

“Recruiting really good people with MENA experience to plan the course offerings, teach the courses, and advise on online learning approaches will be urgent and important.”

Asked about political readiness in the region for such a joint Israeli-Arab venture, Daly said: "There have been Joint Israeli-Arab programmes for decades. A recent one is the UNESCO-sponsored project of Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), which is backed by Israel and the Palestinian Authority as well as Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan and Turkey."

Daly concluded: "Young people learning together via online courses should be perfectly feasible."

But Yasser Gaber Dessouky, a professor at the college of engineering and technology at the Arab academy for science and technology and maritime transport in Alexandria, Egypt, told University World News that despite the fact that “the e-academy would be useful for students”, especially given that they are spending a lot of their time on the internet already, “the MENA region is not ready at all, from what I see”.

He argued that in particular the current political situation does not promote higher education cooperation.

Scholarship Fellowship: The Gabriel García Márquez fellowship in cultural journalism, Colombia

This program is established by the New Journalism Foundation -FNPI -and the Ministry of Culture of Colombia in collaboration with the Secretary of Culture of Barranquilla, the Cartago Foundation, the Hay Festival, the Cartagena International Music Festival, and with the support of the Organization Ardila Lülle (OAL) and the University Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Caribbean campus.

The purpose of this award is to use the themes of music, literature and popular culture to strengthen the basic forms of cultural journalism, specifically the interview, extended reportage and critical commentary. It will also give an opportunity to think about the role of cultural journalism in an era in which creator and audience have an increasingly direct contact, facilitated by digital tools.

The Gabriel García Márquez fellowship in Cultural Journalism will be divided into three modules: Music, Popular Culture and Literature. All modules will be coordinated by FNPI teacher Héctor Feliciano and the American journalist Jonathan Levi. In addition, each module will include guest experts, both national and international.

Eligibility

1. We will select 20 journalists, fluent in English, with a minimum of three years experience, who work or publish in print or digital media.
2. To verify English proficiency, there will be an interview via telephone or skype with the finalists.
3. 6 places will be reserved for Colombians, some of whom may be selected from among the journalists who have previously participated in the training program in cultural journalism of the Ministry of Culture.

In both instances, the letter must specify that the media is committed to publishing the articles you produce during the fellowship, as long as they comply with their editorial politics
• A piece of reportage or other article of your authorship that has been published in the past year. This text must focus on either music or literature depending on the module chosen by the applicant.
