The Department of History is inviting applications for 2 three-year bursaries, open to incoming students, tenable from 24 September 2012. Bursaries will be initially offered for one year and will be renewed annually, subject to satisfactory progress reports.

The department will waive the full-time Home/EU tuition fees otherwise payable by the student. This award is open to applications from incoming students who have been awarded a full-time place on the MPhil/PhD programme in the History department commencing in September 2012.
We also welcome applications from international students – however, the award will not exceed the home/EU fee per annum. In this instance, the bursaries will comprise fee-discount awards rather than full fee waivers.

The award cannot be held in combination with an award from a Research council or similar body.

Europe still the top destination for US students

The UK remains the top destination for students from the US looking to study abroad.

The Open Doors 2011 survey, published today by the Institute of International Education, reveals that there was a 4.3 per cent increase in the number of students opting to study in the UK in 2010-11, above the average overall increase of 3.9 per cent.

Europe retained its position as the most popular destination: 54.5 per cent of all Americans studying abroad were at a European institution, with 12.1 per cent in the UK.

However, the biggest percentage increases were in more exotic locations, including Israel, which saw a 60.7 per cent rise, and India, up 44.4 per cent year on year.

The Open Doors survey also shows an increase in the number of overseas students opting to study in the US, up 5.7 per cent from the previous year.

However, although this number has increased 32 per cent over the last 10 years, the proportion of international students compared to domestic students has actually dipped slightly, from 3.57 percent in 2000-01 to 3.51 percent in 2010-11.

The data show that over half of the international students in the US come from just five countries: China, India, Korea, Canada and Taiwan.

The biggest percentage increases in 2010-11 were from Saudi Arabia, up 43.6 per cent, and China (23.3 per cent).

California has the most international students, according to the report, with the University of Southern California hosting more than any other institution in the country.

The report also shows that over two-fifths of international students in the US are either pursuing degrees in business and management or engineering.

Meanwhile Nafsa, the association of international educators, has released an annual report (partially based on the findings of the Open Door study) showing the financial contributions of international students to the US economy.

Overall, it finds, international students contribute $20.23 billion (£12.59 billion) to the US economy in tuition fees and living expenses.

The top five states benefiting financially from international students are: California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

Despite Nafsa’s findings, the Open Doors survey shows that government and institutional support for encouraging international students to attend US institutions has declined.

Fewer students in 2010-11 were sponsored by US universities, the US government or a US-based private sponsor than in the previous year.

Millennium Youth Camp 2012, Helsinki, Finland

Description

Technology Academy Finland and the Finnish Science Education Centre LUMA are going to organize the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp to be held in Helsinki Metropolitan Region, Finland in June 2012. During this camp, about 30 talented and young people from different parts of the world will meet for a week to work together on different projects on mathematics, science and technology. These young people will also get a chance to meet famous scientists as well as the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize Winner during this event.

About the Camp

The Millennium Youth Camp is held on an annual basis, attended by students from all continents. In 2011, almost 1500 young people from a hundred different countries applied to take part. One of the camp’s primary goals is to encourage young scientists to network at an early stage in their careers and help them launch a career in science or technology.
During the camp, Millennium Youth Campers are presented with an overview of Finnish expertise and top-level research in the natural sciences, mathematics and technology. They are introduced to a number of Finnish companies and institutes of higher education. In addition to lectures, workshops and visits to Youth Camp partners, the camp programme includes project work supervised by top-level experts and carried out in small multi-national groups. The Millennium Youth Camp’s official language is English.
The week-long 2012 Millennium Youth Camp will take place in the Helsinki Metropolitan Region and start on 9 June 2012. Participation is free of charge. As in previous years, the project themes are climate change, renewable natural resources and energy, water, ICT and digitalisation, and applied mathematics.(to find out more about the project themes, please click here)
This international camp offers like-minded young people who are interested in mathematics, science and technology a chance to spend a week doing project work together and also meet top scientists, the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize winner and people working in Finnish companies and organizations. Participation is for free.

Eligibility

Anyone born between years 1993-1996 is eligible to apply for a place in the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp. Applicants must have good English-language skills as the camp programme and all related material are only produced in English.

How to apply?

The application process has 2 phases:
In the first phase, young people from all over the world who were born between 1993 and 1996 are eligible to apply for a place in the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp using the online application form. The names of the 100 applicants selected for the second phase of the application process will be published on 1 February 2012, and they will be given a period of four weeks to produce project plans. In the second phase, the 30 camp participants will be selected by a steering group consisting of representatives of Finnish higher educational institutions and Millennium Youth Camp partners. Internship Programme of the German Business

Within the framework of the Internship Programme of the German Business, young graduates and students from the Western Balkans complete three to six months long internships in leading German companies and they get an insight in German business culture. After their stay in Germany, the students will use their experience and contacts to support the reconstruction in their home countries. The program serves to intensify the regional reconciliation, economic relations and create a cross-sectoral network of young, cosmopolitan professionals in the region.

The programme was established in 2003, after the assassination on Zoran Djindjic, Serbia’s Prime Minister, when the Eastern Committee of German economy initiated in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of economic co-operation and development, the Zoran Djindjic Internship Programme. The goal was to preserve the legacy of Prime Minister Djindjic and to bring the region, Serbia and its people closer to the European Union. In 2007, after three very successful years, the Zoran Djindjic Internship Program of German Business was extended to the other countries of Western Balkans.

SI Scholarships for East Europe for master’s level studies in Sweden

The objective of the scholarship program is to promote democratic, economic and social development through supporting know-how and transfer of knowledge to advanced students within areas in which Sweden is at the forefront of academic research.

The SI Scholarships for East Europe for 2011/2012 are offered to the students on this list (pdf).

If your name is not on the list you have unfortunately not been offered a scholarship from the Swedish Institute.

Countries

The program is only available to citizens of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia.

How to apply

Information about scholarships for the academic year 2012/2013 will be published in due course. The application period for study programs starting fall semester 2012 will open in December 2011.
The deadline for the SI Scholarships for East Europe 2011 has passed.

Who is eligible?

The scholarships are intended for guest students from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Serbia for full time temporary studies in Sweden starting in fall semester. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.
You are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:

• You have already lived in Sweden for two years or more when the scholarship period is due to begin.
• You have a Swedish permanent residence permit or a work permit.
• You have a previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for Master’s level studies or research at a Swedish university. However, students who have attended the Swedish Institute Summer University may apply.
• You already hold a master's degree from a Swedish university/university college.

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 8,000 per month.
The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in fall semester. The scholarships are usually granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that study results are satisfactory.
The scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.
The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders within this program will receive one travel grant of SEK 5,000 in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant will be paid upon arrival in Sweden.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

College of Europe - scholarships

Please note that the College of Europe does, in principle, not grant scholarships. However, the number of scholarships in the CEECs being quite limited, except for Polish and Slovenian applicants, the College of Europe has decided to finance a certain number of (partial) scholarships itself. We encourage students from these potential countries to submit their application.

Approximately 70% of the studens are granted scholarships by their government or by public or private institutions. For all scholarships indicated below, candidates should apply online (www.coleurope.eu) and send by post a printed copy of the online application with all required documents to their national or regional selection committee (indicating that they apply for these scholarships on the application form) AND to the College of Europe Admissions Office (Dijver 11, BE-8000 Brugge). If no selection committee is available students send their application to the College of Europe Admissions Office only.

The Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship program in 2011/2012

We are pleased to announce the 23rd year of the Scholarship scheme for music students. A total of 43 Scholarships in 29 countries will be awarded to full-time students in 2011/2012.

Applicants should not be older than 25 years.

The scholarship program is available in the following countries, though implementation, application and selection methods differ for each country.

In 2011/2012, the scholarships’ discipline is Brass & Woodwind. Regulations may vary depending on the country.

Applicants are to download and fill out the application form and to send it to the appropriate contact address together with a recording of two titles.

• Please make sure to send a CD, DVD or Mini Disc with your recordings together with the application form.
• The length of both pieces should not exceed more than 20 minutes.
• The quality of the sound does not have an effect on the later selection process.

The closing date for applications for the 2011/2012 Scholarships is November 30th 2011.
