FYI Internship in the Research and Development Unit – Project ID CHECK 2012
To support the Unit in the project “ID CHECK 2012”, we are offering an internship for a candidate with the
following profile:
Profile
•Degree in International Relations, Security Studies, Police studies or similar fields
• Knowledge of EU policies (immigration and internal security)
• Demonstrated interest in research on new technologies applied to security/law enforcement and/or operational research related to law enforcement
• Capacity to interact with different stakeholders, flexibility, teamwork and orientation to multitasking
• Excellent reporting skills in English
• Fluency in using Microsoft Office
• Demonstrated interest in event organization preferable
Tasks
Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the intern undertakes tasks in connection with the project “ID
CHECK 2012” aimed at fostering research in the areas of document fraud detection (especially electronic
documents), identity fraud (biometrics) and behavioral analysis for risk assessment (deception detection). In
particular, the tasks of the intern are:
• To support the project team with basic research on specific topics related to the project:
o draft background reports,
o contribute to the evaluation of questionnaires,
o draft meeting summaries
• To support the logistical organization of events organized as part of the project (workshops and
meetings)

Eligibility
Any candidate who meets the following minimum eligibility criteria may apply for an internship at Frontex: - Nationality – to be nationals of the Member States of the European Union, Schengen associated countries or candidate countries benefiting from a pre-accession strategy
- Education – to have completed at least three years (six semesters) of higher education (university education, studies equivalent to university or typical internal police/law enforcement studies) on the date of sending the application
- Languages – to have very good, proven knowledge of the working language of Frontex (English) at the level B2 or higher.
Note: Prior internships in EU bodies and work experience – Internships are usually open to candidates who have not yet benefited from any kind of internship in European institutions, agencies or bodies and who have not yet had the possibility to have their first employment after graduation. If justified for the benefit of service, Frontex may accept applications from candidates having already interned at other EU institutions or already having work experience in relevant fields, if they seem to present added value for the agency  Duration of internship and working conditions Internships shall be granted for a minimum period of 2 months and a maximum period of 6 months.
Interns shall keep the same working hours and have the same public holidays as Frontex staff.
During the internship period, the intern shall be entitled to two days of leave per month, acquired pro rata to the months worked.
Interns shall be required to comply with the internal rules governing the functioning of Frontex, in particular the rules concerning security and confidentiality.
If the intern’s participation in a particular project during the internship shall involve access to sensitive Frontex information, only candidates holding security clearance from the Member States might be accepted for such internship.
Financial matters Internship will be awarded a monthly grant of EUR 500. Interns who are non residents of Warsaw or its environs (who will need to relocate from their current place of residence in order to take up the internship) in addition to the grant shall be entitled to a monthly allowance intended to cover part of the living costs in Warsaw - EUR 300 and a lump sum covering the travel expenses incurred at the beginning and at the end of the internship – EUR 100 for one-way trip. The above mentioned payments shall be calculated in EUR and paid in PLN, according to the InforEuro monthly exchange rate.
Frontex does not cover sickness or accident insurance. The intern is responsible for arranging and paying for such insurance prior to the start of the internship at Frontex.

Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies’ (EXCEPS) 2012 Conference

Description

The manner in which conflicts are analyzed and represented  are  intimately linked to conflicts’ various stages, including efforts to mitigate and/or abate their violent effects, be it through military intervention, humanitarian aid and/or the creation of new political dispensations.  The shared understandings that provide the bases for these representations and analyses, however, are the products of various discursive practices within governments, NGOs, academia, journalism and manifold cultural productions (e.g., literature, visual arts, museums, etc.). These practices are contingent and messy, and often deeply contested.
The conference will investigate these practices from a multidisciplinary perspective, incorporating insights from both practitioners and academics. It seeks to uncover how the interplay of economic incentives, organizational cultures, political and social climates and personal and collective beliefs lead to the production and privileging of particular types of knowledgevis-à-vis conflict and peace. It also seeks to explore how these processes vary across occupations, disciplines, time and space. For instance, how do donor and NGO priorities affect the production of ‘local’ knowledge within a conflict site? Are certain stakeholders accorded greater legitimacy vis-à-vis knowledge production?  How does access to conflict areas and privileged informants, language and translation, as well as the processes of data collection and representation inform specific conflict interpretations and mitigation efforts? Similarly, if a conflict is located within the ’academic periphery’, how do the practices and priorities of the ‘core’ (e.g., US academia) shape knowledge production? In terms of time, how does knowledge change as conflicts transition away from violence, thus becoming ripe for ‘lesson’ extraction and exportation?
Beyond governments, NGOs, the media and academia, the conference also seeks to investigate how cultural productions create, affirm and/or challenge knowledge of peace and conflict. Specifically, how is knowledge of conflict and peace encoded through architecture and space planning, the visual arts, literature, museums, etc.? Do the different organizational cultures and intended audiences governing the production of these cultural artefacts create different types of knowledge? How are these types of knowledge incorporated and/or challenged by other knowledge producers within conflicts and peace processes?
The venue will take place from the 9 till the 10 July 2012 University of Exeter, UK.
The conference theme is ” The Construction(s) of Conflict and Peace”.

The conference committee welcomes abstracts and panel proposals on any aspect of this theme. To submit a proposal for a paper or panel, please send an abstract of a maximum of 500 words to exceps-conference@exeter.ac.uk by 15 January 2012. Successful applicants will be notified by 15 February 2012. As a limited student travel fund will be available, please indicate in your abstract if you wish to be considered for this fund.

The 2-year-long (120 ECTS) European Master Course TEMA European territories (civilisation, nation, region, city): identity and development proposes the analysis of political use and scientific representation of territorial units (civilization, nation, region, city) in an interdisciplinary, research-based curriculum.TEMA Master Course is offered by a consortium of the following European universities: Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Hungary, École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales of Paris, France, University of Catania, Italy, and Charles University of Prague, Czech Republic.
Organised in four major modules: civilization, nation, region and city, that represent four research scales, as well as four different approaches to historical, political, social and cultural issues of space and those of territory, the TEMA Master provides students with an in-depth understanding of European cohesion policy and regional development emphasising on legal framework and scientific analysis.

• Students must hold a first degree (BA/BSc /180 ECTS/) in History, Geography, Anthropology, Ethnography, Cultural studies, Urban Studies, Nationalism Studies, Law, Economy, Administration.

Scholarship

Category A scholarships:
The scholarship consist in a 1000 € monthly allowance, a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of cost up to 4000 € per year and a maximum contribution to the Master Course participation costs (including insurance coverage) up to 4000 € per semester.
Category B scholarships:
The scholarship consist in a 500 € monthly allowance and a maximum contribution to the Master Course participation costs up to 2000 € per semester.

World Business Dialogue 2012

The “World Business Dialogue” is the world’s largest student-run business convention. Here, 60 top-class personalities from economy, science and politics enter a discussion about economically and socially relevant, future-oriented topics with 300 international students and just as many executives, notably from German companies. For 25 years, Cologne University is converted into a convention centre for the economic elite for two days. 

Also known under its former title “Deutscher Wirtschaftskongress”, the World Business Dialogue will once again take place on March 14-15, 2012 for the 15th time. The convention’s organisation is realized by the members of the Organisationsforum Wirtschaftskongress e.V. (OFW), where approximately 40 students are responsible for the project’s success. Furthermore, during the period leading up to the convention, the OfW e.V. is assisted by sponsors and a supporting team of 200 students who allow for the smooth running of the convention.

The World Business Dialogue’s singularity and relevance are supported by a large number of well-known speakers that have participated in past conventions; among these are Josef Ackermann, CEO of Deutsche Bank, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, and Michael Bloomberg, governing mayor of New York, who made use of the convention as a platform for discussion and exchange and appreciated the student’s commitment. The same is also true for the 300 corporate participants who were and continue to be attracted by a mixture of cross-generational dialogue, deeply founded topics, networking and recruiting.

Fees and allowances

The participation fee of the World Business Dialogue is mandatory to all students.

• International Students: EUR100
• German, Swiss and Austrian students: EUR50

The differentiation of prices is proportional to the risks taken from us on covering your accommodation expenses and your assured presence in case of being selected. Cooping with immense travel expenses can be an issue for student participants.The convention is able to provide a much higher amount of Dialogue Scholarships, in order to diminish the financial obstacle for participating in the Dialogue. The Dialogue Scholarship covers a student’s travelling expenses from a major airport/train station to Cologne, Düsseldorf or Frankfurt.

You are chosen by a company, which inherits the costs of travelling entirely. In addition to the financial aspect of the Dialogue Scholarship,it is offered a unique networking experience for students and companies involved: students receiving a Dialogue Scholarship are exclusively meeting the company incurring their travelling expenses at a special event hosted at the Dialogue. There are also possibilities of external Dialogue scholarships

In order to qualify for a Dialogue Scholarship it is necessary to interpret the 15th World Business Dialogue’s topic in a creative way by turning in a topic related creative work such as videos, photographs, songs, essays and any kind of creative ideas. The application for a Dialogue Scholarship is processed by applying for the participation in the 15th World Business Dialogue via the Online Application Tool. However, do not forget that your videos, essay etc. are subject to the following restrictions. International Master Scholarship at Ghent University, Belgium

Description
During its meeting of 23 May 2001, the Board of Directors decided that special measures would be taken to provide postgraduate scholarships to candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a master's degree at Ghent University. The scholarship consists of an allowance of €1000 per month and the yearly tuition fee with a maximum of 80€. Once you get an intstallation fee of 500€. In case of increased tuition fee for the master's programme, Ghent University will only reimburse the refundable part. Airline ticket and visa costs are carried by the student. 

Eligibility
Degree
Applicants for master's programmes should already have obtained a bachelor degree when they submit the application.

Nationality
The applicants must come from and should be nationals of one of the developing countries on the Master Grants country list (PDF). Priority, however, will be given to the categories on the country list with the lowest levels of development and income. Priority will also be given to students applying for an ICP-programme whose country is not on the VLIR-country list but on the UGent list.

Language and proficiency
The application is to be made in English. The applicant should have a very good command of the English language. Click here to see the requirements.

Applicants who already received a Master Grant in the past, are not eligible.

Application Procedure
New students, which are students who never applied before for a Master Grant, need to take the following steps:

Once the Research Coordination Office gets your application from the International Admissions Desk, you will be informed by e-mail.

Taiwan Scholarship for International Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students at Taiwan's Universities, Taiwan

Description
In an effort to encourage outstanding international students (excluding students from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau) to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world

The MInistry of Education awards outstanding international students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Taiwan by awarding each recipient of the Taiwan scholarship the following:

• Tuition and payment of academic fees, including credit fee . Upon validation of tuition and above fees, the MOE awards each recipient per semester up to NTD40,000. If the total amount of these fees should exceed NTD40,000, the remainder of all costs shall be covered by either the recipient, or the recipient’s college, whereas over NTD40,000 are the sole responsibility of the recipient. Tuition and academic fees do not include any of the following: administration fees, thesis advising fees, insurance premiums, accommodation, Internet access, all of which are payable by the recipients.
• Subsistence allowance: The MOE offers each recipient undertaking undergraduate studies a monthly stipend of NTD15,000; it offers each recipient undertaking postgraduate studies a monthly stipend of NTD20,000.

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be a foreign national with a high-school diploma or post-secondary degree(s), with an excellent academic record, and be of good moral character.
2. Applicants are ineligible if they meet the following criteria:

• Are R.O.C. nationals or overseas Chinese students 
• Are already registered or have obtained student status at any university/college in Taiwan. Graduating students pursuing further studies are exempt from this rule.
• .Have already studied in Taiwan for the same level of degree as the one in which they currently intend to enroll.
• Are exchange or dual/joint degree students admitted in accordance with academic cooperation agreements between local universities/colleges and international universities/colleges.
• Have been a recipient of the Taiwan Scholarship for over a total of five years.
• Have had, in the past, their Taiwan Scholarship or Huayu Enrichment Scholarship from the MOE revoked.
• Are recipients of any other scholarship or subsidy offered by the Taiwan government or education institutions in Taiwan. This excludes subsidies offered by universities/colleges to cover tuition and other fees exceeding the scholarship limit.

Application Procedure
Applicants should send the following document within the period specified enclosed with their application to the nearest Taiwan Embassy or Representative Office in their country. Failure to include any of these documents renders the application incomplete, and the applicant will not be further considered for the scholarship, without further notice:

• Taiwan Scholarship Application Form (available at the nearest Taiwan Embassy or Representative Office)
• A copy of the applicant’s passport or other nationality certificates.
• A copy of the highest degree and academic transcripts. If issued by international educational institutions, these documents must be authenticated by an overseas Representative Office or be sealed and delivered by the awarding institutions. Documents in a language other than Chinese or English must be translated into Chinese or English and the translated documents must be authenticated.
• A copy of admission application materials to universities/colleges in Taiwan (e.g., copies of application fee remittance, application form, receipt of application from universities/colleges, e-mails, ).
• A copy of a language proficiency certificate:
• A copy of results or certificate for the “Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language” (TOCFL) Basic or above.
• For applications to all-English programs, a copy of TOEFL test scores or other recognized English language proficiency exams or degrees awarded in English must be submitted. English-speaking nationals are exempt from this rule.
• Two letters of reference, signed and sealed in envelopes (i.e. from the principals, professors, or supervisors). Photo copies and email submissions of letters of recommendation will not be considered
• Additional documents as specified by the individual representative offices.
